Like an old Charlton Heston movie. Cecile B Demille language with very formulaic parts. Steamy but often times pointless sex and menages.
I would like the subtle hint of Lilly's possible wolf ancestry to have been expanded on. Maybe a sequel in which her mother comes to visit and finds her mysterious guard? Perhaps a hea for her as well?
I didn't like Ryker at first. His trickery to get Lilly up to the wolven stronghold bothered me. He turned out to be the good guy and his cousin, the prince, was the one she really needed to be cautious around. Then they wanted her to do battle in a contest. They wanted her to win against Elvara.
This book was okay, not great. There is fighting and a love story that is sort of forced to be menage against the woman's will.
Lilly the main character was trying to win her place as a kings guard but ends up as the prince's concubine, but if she learns the way of the wolves fighting and wins the tournament for a special trophy she will win a favor.
I gave this one star because I didn't like the book. It had many suspenseful scenes. But just not what I was NXpicting.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.**I received an ARC copy of Branded By The Black Wolves by Hollie Hutchins so my review may differ slightly from the published version.I enjoy reading some romantic fantasy, but I did not care for Branded By The Black Wolves. The story is well written, but I am the wrong reader for Branded By The Black Wolves (more on why below). Granted, as a hetero male I am probably not within the author’s target audience so YMMV.Branded By The Black Wolves surprised me a few times. At first I thought that Branded By The Black Wolves would be a harem story centered on Balthen’s harem with Ryker as his pimp.The world that Hutchins creates is vivid and well written. For a first book in what might become a series, Hutchins does a great world building job. The magical style is interesting and different than many other fantasy worlds. Hutchins created a world with a rich, compelling background.Branded By The Black Wolves has interesting characters. I liked how Elvara was so mysterious her magic unknown. I liked Ryker the most but I think that Balthen is a jerk of the highest order. I did not wish to see Balthen die a slow, miserable death, but I wished the MC would have stopped sleeping with him.I would like to read more about the world and the characters Branded By The Black Wolves is set in but with a different romantic and sexual style. I just do not care for MFM romances or romances where there is any kind of male sharing. If well written I can tolerate some of the women taking other women as lovers, but strongly dislike when the males share women.This is simply a matter of personal taste Branded By The Black Wolves is a good book. In my opinion Branded By The Black Wolves with a different, romantic and sexual style would be deserving of four stars or better.
Humans, shapeshifter wolves and demons, oh my. The story starts off very promising with the human female, Lilly, trying to break through a man’s world trying to be a Kings guard man. Tortured and teased and bruised by her fellow men in training, they try to keep her down from succeeding in her goals is to believed throughout this whole story. But I was wrong. This mysterious man comes and challenges Lilly and asked her for a favor he wins and she complies. Tired on her feet and bruised, she excepts the challenge and of course is defeated and yields. He takes Lilly to different location for home and shows her a different way of being a ‘warrior. She will be trained to be one of the elite warriors that are all women. Using her determination of the body to dance and use a specific fighting form to win against opponents far and wide in a tournament. Button wait, there’s more because the demons have re-arisen. How to keep it a secret when they’re killing humans and Wolven alike? The author gives a very good reason of background with a prelude of history the the reasons for the upcoming adventure and eventually our Lilly, the main character heroine needs to except this way of life as a concubine and to be branded by the Wolven prince. She used to be one of his concubines but also a warrior. She is finally forgetting the hate of the Wolven Prince and his recruiter cousin for stealing her from home. They both have to figure out how they’re going to survive being in love and not getting killed for the betrayal. Being lovers can eventually an option. There’s a couple twist and turns that are appealing to the eye and how things are going to pan out. The story is not too deep the sexual encounters are not too graphic there on the light side but still interesting as a Ménage is in the making. No clif hangers, no sappy but nice satisfactory ending.
