I reluctantly ordered and then read this book, based on the recommendation of a co-worker who told me over and over how good it was and how much I would love. So I ordered it and it sat in my magazine rack at home until I reluctantly picked it up and started reading it on a rainy Saturday afternoon. After one chapter, I was HOOKED and could not put it down.I was never a big Motley Crue fan. I liked their radio hits, but that's as deep as it went for me. But these guys tell their stories in a way that has you rooting for them and they almost make you feel sorry for them - even though they are treating women like crap, drinking like fish, doing more drugs in a day than most people could handle in a month, stealing each other's girlfriends, you name it. There are specific stories that will stay with me forever - Ozzy Osbourne snorting ants out of a sidewalk crack at a hotel is one of those stories. The Motley Crue guys are non-stop crazy, non-stop over the top and just plain NON-STOP. I had this book read in two days (and it's a THICK book) and was sad when it ended. I wanted more. Reading this book didn't make me more of a Motley Crue fan but it was the most entertaining and interesting book I've read in a long time and one that will stay on my bookshelf for years to come. I highly recommend it to all Motley Crue fans and fans of good rock and roll stories.

This is one of the best music memoirs I have ever read. I mean, everything I ever thought about Motley Crue and its individual members before I read this book turns out to be mostly true lol The way each of them gets to tell their POV of the same event is really cool. It's really a riveting read and not a dull moment and again, I gotta say, poor John Corabi lol Anyway, I would love to see a follow-up too as this book is now 17 years old. Since then, they did another album with all four original members, they have now retired the band (permanently?) and did their last tour. Also since then, their personal lives have changes a lot. More divorces, new relationships/breakups (multiple) and marriages. Of course, there's not been a dull moment in the lives of these men since 2001 even though now they are in their 50s and 60s and most are grandpas now. I am still sure there's more story to tell and would love to see a part two! In the meantime, I am looking forward to "The Dirt" movie that will be on Netlfix this year. They just wrapped shooting. After reading this book, I walked away with a new found respect for the band and each member. They all had(have) their issues, but you can't say they didn't actually LIVE LIFE and all are still alive and kicking as of 2018 and still doing music, but I still recommend this book even if it's been a minute because the tales are all relevant especially as it relates to their 80s heyday. Had such a ball reading this!

Very plain, simple writing and crazy ass stories as you might expect. This is fascinating to me as a kid who grew up in the 80s and listened to hair bands all the time. It's a fun, crazy, crazy, indulgent read for a 40 something year old guy so many years later. Highly recommend (if you're not easily offended by insane behavior) and think it'll blow anyone's mind who had a normal upbringing...these guys had such messed up childhoods! Eye opening.

OK, I've read many books of rock bands and their debauchery possibly the best being by Duff McCaggin of Guns and Roses. But for pure debauchery, no holds barred, over the top drugs, sex and liquor, this one takes the cake. Not saying I'm a total fan and definitely not a fan of the band, but they had a story to tell and they told it.What separates this book is the 4 different authors. One member remembers an event but the next chapter shows the recollection from a different perspective. This is insightful given the infighting. But the competing stories gives you a much better picture of what to believe. If you like rock and roll/heavy metal debauchery, read this book. You will not be disappointed! Grossed out maybe but not disappointed.

Another fast read. I read autobiographies of everyone, of late, people, bands, places of when I was young. Of the four band members, Nikki was the most in depth. This tells of the bands beginnings, their decadence, splits, personal lives, and everything in between, from not only the four band members, but others in management that added a view point beyond, or other perspective of the four. If I had to choose one of the four to be friends with, it would be Mick. The things that Nikki, Tommy and Vince describe doing, especially to groupies, are beyond me. Some people may say a groupie deserves what they get, but there are boundaries.I still give it five stars; for even though growing up I could have cared less about their personal lives, they did not seem to water down the debauchery as they looked back and wrote this as middle aged men, and perhaps with maturation that should be gained over the decades. We all knew this book was not going to be about a band of choir boys.

I was never really a Crue fan even though I was a teenager in the 80's. Van Halen was more my thing and then early Metallica. But this book did not disappoint. It has everything. Sex, drugs, violence, you name it. I felt like I should check myself into rehab after reading it. Or at least washing my hands. These guys were/are nuts. Congrats on telling the story in a smart way that gave us a look inside each person's interpretations. I enjoyed reading it.

From the Publisher

Yes, it is possible to be all things to all people, if you're talking about the Emacs editor. As a user, you can make any kind of customization you want, from choosing the keystrokes that invoke your favorite commands to creating a whole new work environment that looks like nothing ever developed before. It's all in Emacs Lisp -- and in this short but fast-paced book. GNU Emacs is more than an editor; it's a programming environment, a communications package, and many other things. To provide such a broad range of functions, it offers a full version of the Lisp programming language -- something much more powerful than the little macro languages provided in other editors (including older versions of Emacs). GNU Emacs is a framework in which you can create whole new kinds of editors or just alter aspects of the many functions it already provides. In this book, Bob Glickstein delves deep into the features that permit far-reaching Emacs customizations. He teaches you the Lisp language and Emacs topics (such as syntax tables and macro templates) in easy-to-digest portions. Examples progress in complexity from simple customizations to extensive major modes. You will learn how to write interactive commands, use hooks and advice, perform error recovery, manipulate windows, buffers, and keymaps, exploit and alter Emacs's main loop, and more. Each topic is explored through realistic examples and a series of successive refinements that illustrate not only the Emacs Lisp language, but the development process as well, making learning pleasant and natural.

About the Author

Bob Glickstein's dog, Alex, says Bob is generous with treats and takes her to the park a lot. Alex remembers the time in the mid- to late 1980s when Bob was first exposed to Lisp at Carnegie Mellon University and created the Lisp-like filtering language FLAMES for the Andrew Message System. She is dimly aware of the way in which Bob's familiarity with Lisp helped him to overcome his initial dislike of Emacs, with the result that he is now an ardent Emacs advocate. Nowadays, she enjoys playing on the beaches and mountains of Northern California while Bob devises new ways to use Emacs for writing email software at Zanshin, Inc.

I found this book quite useful to get me started on writing Gnu emacs Lisp. It is clear and fairly well organized, and far easier to deal with than the standard documentation, which I find lacks the level of organization needed for so large a language.By "large" I mean mainly the number of functions available. Lisp as a language is not really hard to learn; it is just so different from many programming languages that it requires a few days of effort to get to "aha!". After that it becomes easy. The drawback to this book is that it doesn't take you far enough. It is an excellent start, and having worked through it you should be able to find your way around in the online or other emacs Lisp documentation. However, it lacks an index of emacs Lisp functions, or other similar reference material. I find this unfortunate, but it's not a show-stopper because once you get through this book you will know enough to use other reference material.

This book is a collection of tutorials, it will help you start using and understanding Emacs. If you are a newbie, then it's a good starting point to use and customize Emacs. However, as a software engineer, I don't see the "big picture", meaning what really happens when Emacs starts, what are the main components of Emacs and how these components communicate with each other, which I think should be the first step needed to customize a software. So, this book has a gentle introduction to Emacs which is good if you just started using Emacs, but don't expect to be an expert in Emacs customization or have low level details of Emacs internals.

Awesome book. Loved all the cool examples, they are actually useful!

love it

Showed up rather quickly, by that night I was coding extensions in Lisp, just like the big boys! The only problem was that the book had been used by a student, as all the good stuff was underlined, bad, maybe not.

OK !

...is reading this book. Step 1 would be to read O'Reilly's "Learning Gnu Emacs" from cover to cover. Step 2 would be to start bookmarking "Info" pages in the Emacs and Elisp manuals (inside Emacs; Emacs can bookmark places in files you've edited, bookmark directories, bookmark Info pages, etc.); and then you are ready to read this book. While you can become proficient in Emacs just by learning a handful of commands, to be truly productive and happy you must learn most of the features and use them. This is a very long process (over a year for me, learning a little bit more each day). But what I've gained from the journey is invaluable. For example, one insight I've gotten is that Emacs can work very well for the novice (open/type/save/close) and the expert (write major mode to handle new language) equally well, and this idea can apply to any software project. (Sure, it sounds simplistic but the moment of "Aha!" is more profound than that.)This book is fairly small and progressively introduces new ideas in writing Lisp code to add functionality to Emacs. I think in retrospect the topics covered were well chosen because I have looked up the examples time and again to use code snippets.Step 4 in mastering Emacs is to read the newsgroup gnu.emacs.help every day for a few months, which will teach you about a great many features Emacs has that are not covered in any book (or covered very well, like term mode, font-lock and many more).

If you have taken the wise step and decided to learn emacs you're aware of the eLISP substructure underlying your C- and M- actions. Once you're aware that this power is there, you will invariably want to use it to make some routine editing patterns faster / more efficient.I mean heck, you learned emacs to hack code in, didn't you? Why not hack emacs to make your hacking faster? In true geek fashion, I thought that this book would be, like so many of ORA's books, a canonical START on the monopoly board of computer / technology progress. It wasn't really. It started with introducing the notion of evaluating a lisp command string (in this case, making sure you have your ^H, ^? and Erase sorted out) - and goes from there. Too little time is spent on primitives (see, not really a programming guide as such) and instead uses a series of examples to make you think about how to use eLISP to handle an issue.....but that's not what you expect from an ORA book is it? You want the reference and the step-by-step -- you want to know you went to the source to get the answer and here was the path, right?Well for that you are actually better off going to gnu.org and reading the elisp manual there. It much more closely approximates the path that the ORA books (i.e. the camel book, etc.) take.Where this fits in -- a nice reference, maybe.IF YOU DO get this book, you'll find some handy examples and a few 'tricks of the trade. ' Nothing really great though.

Adorable book explaining plant functions in easy to understand language. Great pictures!

Lively and interesting science for kids

I appreciated Hirsch's clever perspective on plants. Certainly, this book is packed with some interesting learning for kids and my daughter and I enjoyed reading this together. We even looked up the squirting cucumber and watched slow motion films of the seeds exploding out of the cucumber-like pod! I highly recommend that fun! Hirsch's endnotes which give a little blurb about the plants featured in the book was super helpful and definitely added to the learning.I need to also mention the beauty of this book. Posada's illustrations are truly fabulous and bring this nonfiction book to life!We enjoyed reading this but I think it is definitely aimed best at the preschool and perhaps kindergarten set.

Plants Can't Sit Still is a playful exploration of an often overlooked characteristic of plants...their movement. Plants don't have feet or fins or wings, yet they can move in many ways. Blossoms grow toward the sun. Roots snake along the ground. Many plants react to their environment. Some flowers fold up for the night. Some fold up when touched. The author also highlights plants which move in more unusual ways, like the tumbleweed and the squirting cucumber. Lastly, the text explores how plants travel: their seeds floating, flying, hitchhiking, and whirling through the air. From cockleburs to coconuts, seeds are designed to travel to new places where conditions are good for growing new plants. The back matter contains a more detailed summary of plant behavior. Along with a glossary, descriptions of each species, and an author's note explaining how she researched the plants in the book, Rebecca Hirsch includes recommended reading, and links to venus fly trap videos and accelerated growth footage.Plants Can't Sit Still is beautifully written, using active verbs and energetic fonts. The text is lyrical and the author avoids rhyme in favor of vigorous prose, inviting readers themselves to move, through the pages and back again. The ending circles back to wording from the beginning, mimicking the plant life cycle. Mia Posada's art is perfectly suited to the text. The illustrated plants climb, slither, and squirm their way across the pages in earthy watercolored collage.

A truly outstanding book that the author has written for ages 5 - 8 and grades K - 3. The illustrations by Mia Posada are bright, colorful and accompany the text perfectly. The hard cover book itself is large enough (9" X 11") to be held by the teacher and the entire class will be able to see it.The text goes into great detail about the manner in which plants grow and the young readers will be able to grasp the fact that plants do indeed reach for the light, climb a fence, walk up a wall and tumble in a breeze. The portion concerning the seedlings growing is fascinating, as well. All plants need water, sunshine and room to grow. I thought it was fascinating to read about the manner in which the seeds 'hitchhike' which explains the reasons that plants are built for travel. Another outstanding teaching example occurs in the text when speaking about the seeds it says 'They take a ride inside a bear' and the illustration shows a bear chewing on a berry bush. I could envision a young child asking about that statement which will lead to an educational moment for the youngster. At the end of the story, the author has a portion entitled 'More About Plants'. This goes into greater detail as to the reasons some plants are more active during the day or night time hours. It also explains photosynthesis and pollinators. Every plant that makes an illustrated appearance in this book is listed with the name and more information about the plant. A glossary at the end explains words that the little ones may have questions about while reading. All in all, an outstanding educational book for the little ones. It is also entertaining with beautiful illustrations which will hold the attention of the children. Most highly recommended. Please note that the author sent me this book for a possible review.

What a beautiful nonfiction book. This is a delightful exploration of the various reasons and methods plants move. From seeking sunlight to evading predators to propagating, all the basics are covered. And the language is fabulous! "Plants can creep. They slither underground or crawl through tall grass..." Wonderful! Who wouldn't want to keep reading? All the verbs are in red, making it an awesome mentor text for using active verbs in your writing. And the art is luscious and lively. I saw this book in manuscript form, and I am so happy to see it emerge into the world as this lovely book!
