Review

"After more than 100 days in this supreme wilderness, McBride’s raw and profound experience has been compiled in The Grands Canyon: Between River and Rim, a gorgeous 236-page coffee-table tome…"— National Geographic “The Grand Canyon needs to be saved by every generation. The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim… aims to capture not just the familiar grandeur but also some of the fragile idiosyncrasies of the between-lands, as an argument for leaving them alone.”  — The New Yorker“Named one of 'The best photo books to gift this holiday season. Freshly compiled work from some of the adventure world's best photographers.'"— Outside Magazine"To put it simply, his new book The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim, is the masterpiece of its genre." — Dr. Tom Myers, author of best selling book Death in Grand Canyon   “Total Masterpiece.”  — Chris Burkard, photographer    “This beautiful coffee table book takes readers on a gorgeous visual journey while also posing critical questions about wilderness conservation."  — Ultimate Experiences Magazine    “A masterpiece in the name of conservation.”   — Renan Ozturk, National Geographic photographer  "The Grand Canyon by self-taught Colorado photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride sprang from his 2015 expedition with Kevin Fedarko (author of The Emerald Mile): The two men backpacked 750-plus, mostly trail-less miles from Lees Ferry to Grand Wash Cliffs. Much to his credit, McBride does not shy from 'non-traditional' motifs that challenge viewer expectations: tangled fence-wire, South Rim light pollution, Havasupai protesters, or a composite of jetboats and choppers clogging the river section called 'Heli Alley.' The overall impression, however—reinforced by grit-and-dirt adventure photography—is that the Grand Canyon still offers much-needed relief and refuge, and not just to Homo sapiens." — High Country News"The best Christmas books for travelers (2018)... Some 5.9 million people a year visit the Grand Canyon, but fewer than a dozen have walked it from end to end, a journey-without-trails of some 750 miles. With the park’s centenary approaching, they share what they found in the canyon’s remote ribs, and report on the continuing struggle between conservation and exploitation (they logged 363 helicopter flights in the space of eight hours). This is one gorgeous, heavy, incredible coffee table book with large photos and stories from McBride and Fedarko's Grand Canyon Thru-Hike. I was fortunate to accompany them on the first leg of this trek, until they were bruised and battered to the point of retreat. There just are not enough words or photos that can portray to even the tenth degree just how difficult and impossible this trek is. I am thankful they came back and completed the arduous trek and have educated the world of the canyon's beauties and secrets; but more importantly, how they have exposed the never-ending threats that are buffeting the canyon from so many different avenues. We need to be diligent as a society to over-protect a place like Grand Canyon, so that it will be pristine for our descendants in 100 and 1000+ years. McBride has done an incredible job capturing the "Grand" vistas, river corridor, side canyons and microcosmic parts of the entire Canyon!

I’m just going to say WOW! If you’ve ever stood on the rim of the Grand Canyon and wondered what was hidden deep in the fabric of the place, this book is for you. That gigantic gaping hole has complexity, delicate textures, and subtilty that defies the God’s eye view from the rim. Pete McBride’s photos convey a stunningly intimate connection to a National Park so large that it can be seen from space, so deep that it bisects the entire State of Arizona with an impassible mile deep moat, and yet so fragile that it’s being destroyed by developers surrounding the place to cash in on the Worldwide brand that is the Grand Canyon. Most impressive, McBride walked the entire end-to-end length of the Grand Canyon over a 13 month period to bring these pictures home.I particularly love how the photos change seasons telling a pictorial story of erosion and time. Of course, there are photos of the Colorado River flowing through the Grand Canyon in amazing light, but I found the intimate shots of slot canyons with pools and springs to be most fascinating. The landscape in the deep backcountry is riveting, but the idea of walking through that rugged terrain is almost unimaginable. Photos of the paths they followed showed an insanely difficult journey. While the tourist area is in the middle of the National Park, the eastern and western reaches, far beyond the view of tourists on the rim, are completely different and uniquely beautiful. There are few large wild areas left in the United States. McBride’s pictures helped me understand what we are losing. We shouldn’t let development mar one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We don’t have another Grand Canyon as a replacement. McBride cut his teeth shooting for National Geographic. It shows.

There is a very small number of people who have hiked from one end of the Grand Canyon to the other. Pete McBride and Kevin Fedarko started out with a few other people to do it in one trip and ended up breaking it into 5 segments. While the Grand Canyon river trip is 277 mile long (measuring down the center of the Colorado River) doing it on foot is well over 700 miles as you work your way around the side canyons, looking for water and ways up and down through the layers that make up this incredible place. Pete's written story of this trip is riveting and his photographs in most cases, just take your breath away. In some cases they are standing on the edges of cliffs, looking miles into the distance and standing someplace where it is possible that no one else has ever stood before and if anyone wants to recreate the photo it would take them 5 or 6 days of hard hiking to get back to that point. These splendid images are not your usual pretty calendar photos. There is so much to see in each photo that you can come back to this book time and time again and you will see something new each time you look at it. I bought one for myself and 2 to give as gifts and I will be giving more as gifts to my friends who love this place as much as I do. One of the purposes of this book was to show just how special this place is and how worthy of protection from outside development forces this is. I knew it was going to be a really great book but it has exceeded all my expectations in that regard. To everyone who worked on this book, who helped with the expedition, Thank you.

I grew up with coffee table books that introduced me, with image and word, to many of the American West’s iconic landscapes. Not until now, however, did that collection include what is probably the most iconic place of them all. This book fills that void with an ambition that is nearly equal to its breathtaking imagery. That ambition? Walking the entire canyon. Not rafting. Walking. Look inside the book and you’ll quickly understand just how daunting a project that is. I know I’ll never do it. Thanks to this photographer, though, I can get a flavor of the hidden treasures I and most mortals will never see firsthand. Bravo to McBride for serving as the terrestrial equivalent of a space telescope and taking us there.

I rafted the Colorado after reading Kevin Fedarko’s “The Emeral Mile” so when I heard that he was embarking on this trip with McBride, I kept up with their progress. I love the book. Sadly, no photographer can capture the GC. You have to go there yourself. The immensity of its nature has to be discovered personally. I have to admit, I love the nighttime moon shot with lantern light in the Graneries. It was surreal and it reminded me that a tribe lived there thousands of years ago and their mark on this land is still tangible. I too remember cacti clinging to my legs, the neophyte traveler in this land that I was. Thank you so much for this book, your treck through this marvelous land and your perseverance to show it to all. Well done.

As an amateur photographer who has trekked extensively in the Grand Canyon region, I appreciate just how much hard work the author has put into getting some spectacular images. This is a beautiful tome that will be eye candy every time you open it. Buy it and enjoy and enjoy and enjoy!

Beautifully photographed, see the Grand Canyon from a viewpoint that very few, if any others have seen it from .

Amazon.com Review

Since 1965, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has been teaching its students how to climb, kayak, and navigate; how to camp without leaving a trace; how to stay warm and dry in the wilderness; how to cope with a backcountry emergency; and how to effectively lead others through such experiences. There are many reasons for spending time in the remote outdoors. Awe-inspiring scenery, peacefulness, wildlife viewing, and exercise are all good reasons. Another is that such experiences build character: "The wildlands teach us to be smart, practical, resourceful, and observant. To hike ten hours through scabrous terrain, cross a brawny river, stay warm in a snowstorm, and navigate your way out of tangled woods tests and builds your best faculties." While no single book can prepare one for spending time in the wilderness--much less impart all the skills necessary to survive in the elements--the NOLS Guide is an eminently useful place to start. Chapters include primers on equipment (fitting boots and packs, choosing a tent, the "Five Commandments for Equipment Care"); appropriate dress for a variety of climates; and ways of traveling in the backcountry, from crossing scree fields to fording rivers. It's not a substitute for in-depth instruction in, say, snow camping, or reading a map and compass. But with a solid grounding in the basics, one can take that first boot-step into what Joseph Wood Krutch called "the great reservoir of energy, of confidence, of endless hope."

You should read this book if you're interested in backpacking *well*, and you want a solid introduction. You are introduced by example a lot of what it takes to be a competent, responsible, healthy, and mindful citizen of the wilderness. As for leadership, it discusses how to build and maintain a civilized hiking group, and the challenges involved. I don't think I was ever left wondering *why* something was suggested, the reasoning is usually clear. You come away feeling like you spent time in the mind of someone who has practiced making these kinds of decisions. This book covers a breadth of outdoorsmanship topics without getting too deep into any one. There are plenty of great details packed in, but I probably won't be keeping this book around for reference. I do plan to get more in-depth learning & reference books on some skills, such as reading the weather and map & compass skills.I have just one criticism and suggestion for a future update. Sixteen years have passed now since this book was last updated. Some details are outdated, especially those about technology choices at the time (fabrics, communication devices, etc. as others have said). I loved reading about it all, but I knew I'd have to get online to update my education on a few things. It would be neat if the next update just omitted those details. If they did that, I bet the book could stay relevant for 100 years without needing an update.

This is an outstanding book! I was introduced to the NOLS series of books by a friend who is a military chopper medic. I have been interested in domestic/international exploration for several years and he introduced me to a book called Expedition Planning, which I subsequently purchased and liked it enough to buy several more books from the NOLS series. If you are a camper, hiker, bird-watcher, star-gazer or any other pursuit that puts you in the outdoors to enjoy the majesty of the world, these books will give you practical advice on how to stream-line your planning, be adequately prepared for your trip, and get the most out of the experience.Awesome book. NOLS is a terrific school putting out great, tried-and-true advice in their publications.

This book is still the Bible for learning about spending time in the outdoors in a comfortable, safe, and responsible manner. It covers gear, clothing, food, cooking, using map and compass, new technology, low impact camping, etc, etc. The section on bear safety is adequate but not great but aside from that, it is the book to have. Once you have read this and want to learn more outdoor technical skills, buy Freedom of the Hills. Once you have learned and practiced the skills in these 2 books, you will be good to go in most land-based outdoor experiences.

This is the PERFECT book for outdoor adventure beginners. I read this book before I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail. At that point in my life, I had only been out in the woods for a couple days at a time and I never really had to worry about how to pack a pack correctly to prevent strain on my back or how to dress in the rain to prevent hypothermia. This book gives you all of this information and more, including how to hang a bear bag, which saved me a couple of times from hungry black bears in NY state. If you plan on doing any kind of trekking in the back country for the first time, read this book before you go.

This book is an EXCELLENT book for anyone new (OR EXPERIENCED) in back country travel. This book can help you assess your skill levels (if you are honest with yourself). I believe being honest with ourselves about our skill sets as well as our abilities is crucial to back country travel (be it camping, backpacking or simply hiking). This book can help you learn skills -- but you have to practice them! It also can help you assess areas of weakness where you need to hone skills OR ask for HELP in learning. Taking a class in crossing crossing glaciers? Learning how to recognize potential avalanches? If you know you don't have these skills, you are truly taking a risk in backcountry where these exist. Back country medicine? Do you know how to best care for wounds? This book is full of essential information. I recommend it to anyone who will be in back country.

When traveling in the outdoors you will encounter many different scenarios during your life time. Allowing your self to learn from others that also spend time camping, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors is invaluable. This great little book offers so much good advice that it needs to be read and studied a few times over a life time. Just little bits of information that aren't needed all the time but do come in handy during special situations are sometimes over looked or forgotten. i recommend reading this book once a year allowing you to bring back some of those forgotten facts that could save your life or at least make your outing more successful. The outdoors is a wonderful and large place .......this book will help prepare you to have many wonderful memories.

This book is AWESOME. The author has picked so many details from his brain and has humorously, wittingly, and confidently put them all into one book. I love this book and have gotten so much out of it so far, and Im only 3/4 done. I will keep this book with me, at least in my car, at all times when planning to head for the backcountry. Im a seasoned outdoors girl already, but there is always more to learn from the brightest and most experienced of minds in the field. Get this book.

Both experienced and novice backpackers will find much of value in this book. My dad always planned and packed as though we were going on a 19th century expedition for a backpacking/camping trip. He asked me "Did we ever not have something we really needed in the field?" The answer was of course "No!". This book will help you to prepare.

Not at all for a beginner! You need to be an advanced student to understand and get anything out of this book. I've used Photoshop for many years - but not for digital painting - I found this book very confusing.

So much information it's overwhelming. I'm like 1/4th the way through it and I have to re read a lot of it to get it to sink in, don't know if I'm daft or if it's just this confusing, probably both. I do understand a lot more about digital painting now and I hope to learn more. I've attached a work in progress so don't judge me to hard but I used what I could understand

I ordered this book as a "throw in" just because I felt I might need it later, but it turned out to be the best book of my bundle! It is extremely detailed in ways to utilize Photoshop if you're interested in character design. It explains step-by-step how to achieve various textures and forms. If you're interested in digital art and character design, this book is a must!

I hesitantly got this book because I love one of the artist's work that is featured in this book and it did not disappoint. The book brought in a lot of different artists with different styles and it helped me to learn various ways to represent a character. The book didn't just get into how to develop a character artistically, but also how they use programs to get their work done.

Note: I've worked as a professional portrait painter in traditional mediums and now work full time as a digital painting instructor. If you're a beginner to drawing and painting the human form, this book is NOT FOR YOU. If you have experience with gesture, life drawing, anatomy, light, color, etc. then this book is a good introduction to digital techniques (if you skip past the horrible drawing lesson sections.)I'll try to sum things up to make this as useful as possible to possible buyers, but it's difficult to do as many chapters and drawings in this book made me pull my hair out, bury myself alive, and burn the entire concept of art itself to a pile of ashes.CONS:The chapters on color scheme, drawing form, anatomy, gesture drawing, character types, composition, body types, posing, etc. are worse than neutral, they are actively inaccurate, badly drawn, hindering to the development of drawing/painting skills and WRONG. I know I'm coming off heated here, but I can't emphasize this enough: if you are looking for instruction on improving your drawing and painting skills, DO NOT take the advice of this book.Color schemes: The examples given are all either horribly desaturated, badly balanced, ignorant of how to create good skin tones, or completely misguided on creating mood and atmosphere. It's all worse than worthless, it's wrong.Form, anatomy, gesture, facial/body construction, posing, etc.: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IGNORE ANYTHING THIS BOOK TELLS YOU!! It relies on comic book stereotypes for anatomy and posing, resulting in awkward, stilted, cliché, horrible drawings if what you're looking for is basic gesture instruction. The bone structure and musculature is all off, they tried to use traditional Bridgman style proportions but clearly don't use that style regularly because their sketches and gestures look awkward, off-balance, flat and dead. Their notes on distinguishing male and female anatomy is so highly stylized it's useless unless you want to draw the same cartoon man and woman over and over and over. Their stylizations to turn their comic style faces into even more stylized comic style faces is heavy handed and the resulting faces are neutral to strange and off-putting. Then, on the same page they'll toss in a picture of a highly rendered woman's face with the most bland, typical, unremarkable features (you know the type.. Tiny nose, huge eyes, same pursed super model lips, chin whatever as every woman on any wizards of the coast card ever made). And why even throw that in? To try to convince readers that yes, the illustrator CAN paint, despite everything else on the page? It seems very obvious the painter learned to render one imaginary woman's face very very carefully and never learned how to do anything else. And they instruct you to draw your quick posing gestures with wobbly lines, completely flat, no hint of mass or believable movement.. They look like the drawings of a high school freshman, AT BEST. If you're looking to learn, don't waste your time listening to artists who are no better at this than you are! Good NIGHT.This is the step by step of how to draw hands: Outline a hand, with all anatomy already placed and detailed. (okay????? Impossible?? WRONG??) Add a flat color skintone (like cartoons do!) Add lighting.^Those instructions are not only TOTALLY UNHELPFUL, they're also WRONG. No portrait teacher or art teacher or artist will EVER suggest this!!! It's nuts!! How is this... Fwoo.Character types: You already know everything they know, I promise. If you really want to read four paragraphs about how erotic and strong pin-up "character types" are, or need to be told that to draw a villain you ought to draw whatever you want, no rules, no suggestions except to add angry eyebrows.. Well then.. You do you. Again, highly stylized sketches clearly drawn for the book are awkward, rushed, and not pleasing to look at. Finished art the illustrator probably did 3 years ago for something totally unrelated is highly rendered, boring, and unremarkable. It is the same woman or man in various awkward poses wearing costumes you've seen a million times before and probably better designed.Composition: Have you ever heard of the golden ratio? Well this writer has, and between it and the rule of thirds, you could learn this chapter better with two Google searches. Also, don't base all of your compositions on these two things. It is not a good idea.Storytelling and moods: If the writer had any basic knowledge of color and human emotion, this chapter would be worth reviewing.Honestly, here are a list of other chapters that will not only not teach you anything helpful, but will also attempt to torpedo the instruction of artists who care about you: body type and skin, designing and painting the face (only partially bad), painting hair (gets SO CLOSE to being useful but misses critical first steps), pose and background (the return of the horrible gestures), honestly.. The drawing and art basics chapters.PROS: Didn't think I was going to get here, did you? Well thank you for your attention and here's some positivity. This book does a fair job of introducing technical basics (photoshop tools). Although everything feels a bit rushed, the program use directions are helpful. The chapters showing workflow are cool if you have some experience, it's interesting to see how different artists build up their paintings. They would be helpful to follow step by step if you're just beginning and want to copy someone else's work to build up some foundational habits. Some of them skip over large chunks of work that are basically just "use your art skills to color", so you get that line drawing to fully colored thing that was very frustrating when I was young and impatient. The quick tips are hit and miss. Believe them on their hair painting techniques, run away when they try to tell you what a Male Ear looks like in contrast to a Female Ear or how using only brown and beige is a good idea when trying to paint Youthful Skin. My favorite was the Thin Lips tip that apparently used Gigi Hadid as a reference. That's as thin as they get, folks! Followed immediately by "Voluptuous Pout" and then "Male Nose"? Boy do I love how every man I know has that typical Male Nose.Texture techniques such as lace, leather, silk, glasses etc could be useful though! So I'm not just hating irrationally here.My takeaway is this. If you're very VERY comfortable drawing and painting portraits, human anatomy, etc. and would like to transition these skills into digital work, this book will give you a lot of good tips and tricks to get you started. Making brushes, how to avoid the slick digital fake look, quick techniques to create texture, etc. are all solid. If you are trying to learn how to draw and paint, this is quicksand. You'll spend years undoing the bad habits this book teaches, IF you're tenacious. If you want to get into sweatshop digital painting and crank out the same fantasy characters over and over for Fiverr, this is exactly the book you want.

Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop is a helpful guide for digital painters tackling character art. It's a 224-page paperback artbook published by 3Dtotal so the presentation style is quite similar to their other books which are filled with screenshots and instructions. The first few chapters by Benita Winckler covers the basics of character design, more on the design aspect than on digital painting, things like what makes a character appealing or an idea work. It deals with colours, anatomy and postures, compositions and other portrait drawing related topics. The next few chapters on Bram "Boco" Sels goes into the digital painting of a character and builds on the art fundamentals covers in the first few chapters. Bram's use of colours and understanding of tone looks amazing. The other chapters feature several artists which each going through their digital painting process of a character from start to finish. So you get to see more variety of characters which includes sci-fi, fantasy and the traditional portraits. Then it's followed by a Quick Tips section with many little mini tutorials that focus on certain features of the characters, e.g. different types of hair, skin, eyes, nose, mouth, clothing material. I have to confess to seeking this out after having watched the movie " Jungle". The book is rich with detail, lively imagination, and human drama. The book explains many details left out of the movie starring Daniel Radcliffe . I found myself wondering over and over why we feel the need to go on these adventures that are destined to fail and will likely kill us or maim us for life if we survive. I have been close to the Amazon in my travels but am too fearful of its power to destroy to ever venture inside.

This was a great read. Simple, direct and leading to an amazing outcome. Adventures in the jungle are great until everything goes wrong. The author is incredibly fortunate to be alive, and just how he managed to avoid death in the jungle makes for a great story of human determination and courage in the face of overwhelming obstacles. Highly recommended and inspiring.

I gave this book 3 stars only because that is supposed to mean "okay". I sincerely hope this is Mr. Ghinsberg's first attempt at writing because, in my opinion, it is a very amateurish effort. I completely agree with other reviewers who said the first half of the book was boring. I kept finding myself saying, "What is wrong with these young men? How can they be that gullible and fall for Karl's ridiculous line?" They sounded and acted more like teenagers than twenty-somethings! (Please, I don't mean to insult teenagers!) Totally unprepared, totally ignorant, totally unaware of the dangers anyone should give serious thought to concerning a trip into the Amazon jungle. How he survived is a true miracle and he definitely had someone looking over him! If you decide to read this book, breeze through the first half and get to the actual "lost in the jungle" part. If you're not squeamish, you may actually enjoy the last half of Yossi's story.

If you love adventure, have courage to withstand the unthinkable, an unyielding will to survive when all hope is lost -- you will love this book. The determination, the loyalty and love of comrades at any cost to rescue one who is lost and in so doing to finds himself says it all about this book.

This was a great read, much better than I had expected. There is some follow up that is missing but not possible to obtain. Love expedition books, but normally they take place in freezing temps and or on a mountain. This was a welcome change. Try it, you might really enjoy it.

This book is such an incredible adventure story that I often found myself doubting it's total veracity. Suspending belief, I bounced down the rivers, trudged through the undergrowth, felt the sting of his battered feet and body, and actually had tears in my eyes by the end. It's not particularly well-written but who cares when you're on a journey that's so wild and unforgettable.

I saw the movie first, the book was more interesting and held my interest well. An amazing story of grit and miracles.

Well written and interesting story. A page turner with an interesting ending. One of the best books I've read in a while.
