All of my kids enjoyed the Poky Little Puppy. So when my son announced that his wife is expecting their first child, this is one of the books I selected to start the baby's library. (yes, I'm old fashioned; every child should have a library.) This is one of the original Little Golden books, loved by many children. I"m looking forward to reading this to a new generation!
Before you balk at the $8.99 list price, keep in mind that this is the 65th anniversary edition of a Little Golden Book classic. Here is what you get:1) First of all, the binder's board used on the front and back cover is much thicker (and consequently more durable) than the original edition.2) The cover material (front, back and spine) is a single piece. The cover material wraps around the binder's board and is held in place by the front and back endsheets. This will virtually eliminate any peeling of the cover over time.3) I'm not certain what weight the paper is that was used throughout the book, but it is a much heavier paper than the original edition. This should minimize if not eliminate tears caused by young children. In addition, the semi-gloss paper makes it more stain resistant.4) Moreover, the pages are held together using the smyth sewn binding process, which means each signature spread is sewn together using binders thread. This is the highest quality bookbinding method available and virtually eliminates the possiblity of pages ever coming loose.5) Finally, there is a 4-page addendum entitled "The Story of 'The Pokey Little Puppy'" that includes a photo of both the author and the illustrator. It's worth noting that even though the book has gone on to sell millions of copies, Janette Sebring Lowrey was paid a flat fee of $75 for writing the story.When my children were young, I paid less than a dollar for Little Golden Books. They now list for $3.99. So, this anniversary edition isn't all that pricey; and for the added features, it's a bargain. My grandson will love it!VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Very cute story and I somewhat remember reading this years ago as I'm now reading it to my child. I give it that the worldbuilding was pretty fantastic, with a god-like creature that keeps sending signs to all the anthropomorphic creatures that romp about, giving and taking away favours all willy-nilly, almost as if it was attempting to teach all the characters a very important lesson but however now as reading it as a adult the message behind it all is strongly portrayed throughout the book.
I love that The Poky Little Puppy has been published - in the full-length version - as a board book. I selected this book as an "instead of an enclosure card" for a friend's baby shower because it was one of my favorites when I was a little girl. My copy of the book was a hand-me-down from my older brother, and it was probably one of the first printings of the book. It's great that the publishers of Little Golden Books recognize the value of continuing to print some of their originals!
I'm writing this off of my husband's account. I just received this book in the mail today! My husband and I both grew up with the majority of these books. So when we had our son, one of the first things we wanted for him was a decent book collection. He's only 11 months old and loves sitting down and having books read to him. These books are perfect as well as really decently priced. We've gone through a few different avenues to purchase books, and although this is the first book from this company, we'll definitely be back for the rest. They're classics to us. I'm positive our son will grow to love them as much as we have. I'll probably be keeping a few to hand down to our grandkids as well. - Cheryl M
One of my favorite stories growing up, and I'm not sure if I still have the old copy tucked away at my folks' house or not, so I had to order a copy when I read it was the book's 75th birthday.Thanks to Amazon's less-than-stellar packaging (reported to them) a corner of the book had a small bend in it, but that didn't affect how great this story is. Pages are nice and thick, will take a little work to get the creases worn in so they flip a bit smoother.
Another in a long line of "Little Golden Book" series for young children. This was bought as a gift and we hope it provides a good base for young ones who first need pictures to understand the story and a willing parent to read to them, and then later a great tool for them as they too learn to read. Well laid out, easy to read and photos are wonderful. What child could resist a cuddly puppy as part of a wonderful story.
I remember this book from my childhood. My five year old daughter loves it. I dont understand some of the complaints about it being old fashioned and not having enough pictures and rubbish like that. Kids today lack the enormous imagination that my generation and older generations had (I'm 34). Not to knock today's great children's authors, but I like the fact that older books made us think and imagine what characters or places looked like. Yes, this book may be "old fashioned" but so what? Give your child some sense of culture - present and past. Some of the bad reviews said the book didn't teach kids a good lesson, or that it sent mixed signals. With all of the mindless television shows and video games out there, does every book in this genre need to have a lesson to learn? Reading is already a learning process and it is very healthy for the brain.I will be introducing more older books to my daughter along with the newer books available. I did the same with my older children and that helped to broaden their reading options.
The Poky Little Puppy was one of my childhood favorites and now I have it for my kids to enjoy. I also purchased The Shy Little Kitten and both are a great addition for our bedtime stories (not too long, not too short.) They’re also a good beginning reading level for my kindergartener. I have a feeling our Golden Books collection will be growing, definitely recommend ..!
