I bought this book on a whim (the author was new to me) and then had doubts as to whether I could actually read it. Let me explain. I've read a number of historicals where the heroine was captured by pirates, sold into white slavery, forced to become a concubine, coerced to marry a monster, or sometimes even worse (I read a lot). Terrible horrors were visited on these women over a prolonged period. Graphic abuse of women is particularly difficult for me as a man, husband, & father to stomach (I offer no excuses). My brother is fond of saying, "You can't un-see something". These types of stories have haunted me dreadfully, so I now try to avoid them. Confessions of a Courtesan is not one of these books. In fact in many ways, this book is an antidote for these other stories. Bad things happen to Elizabeth, but this story is about recognizing the peril of one's situation and having the courage to do what has to be done, the immeasurable value of real friendships, and the salvation that true love offers. It is a wonderful story, told extremely well, while remaining true to actual people and events. I enjoyed this book immensely and would describe it as a must read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I won't soon forget Elizabeth Armistead.

The general storyline of this book is a good read and you'll find yourself wanting to know what happens next. However, so much of the areas that could've been poignant are taken up by steamy bedroom moments. The main character is a very sexual being which lays doubt for a reader when it seems every man she sleeps with for money also seems to stimulate her. Courtesans by the very nature of their work may have found some of their associations pleasurable but certainly not all. The book often comes across as soft core pornography as well as a romance novel. I was truly hoping to see more into the mind of the character but she appears to have very little mind. If anyone is interested in a rags to riches through use of the body as well as the mind, I recommend "Forever Amber." It's a far better read with a plot that's been called the English Gone With the Wind.

This is normally a book I would never choose to read. But someone in my book club selected it and Iâ€™m glad she did. I was pleasantly surprised. Itâ€™s well written and I enjoyed the journey through the Georgian era. I also really liked the story of the heroineâ€™s experiences, as well as the love story. The book had me curious about the various characters within, and I started looking up some of them online, and reading a little bit about them. I was surprised by how much of this book is based on facts (minus the unknown details of course). The Prince of Wales, the Derbys, Dorset, Daly, Fox, Fitzpatrick etc. Iâ€™ve been reading about some of these real life characters and theyâ€™re fascinating. Goes to show how some of the best â€œfictionalâ€ characters are just real ones!

I truly enjoyed this book. It is part Georgian Historical (takes place during George III's battle not to lose the American Colonies) and part biographical novel of the life of Elizabeth Fox, Queen of the Cypriots and wife of George Fox, a notable statesman. Elizabeth loses her brother and Mother to an epidemic that leaves her actor father blind. She takes care of him on the small amount he earns begging until she loses him one day. She is unable to find work and is care for by Mr. Armistead, a hairdresser and molly who is being blackmailed and needs to leave the country. She had fallen in love with him before she knew he was gay and with no other options, decides to let him go ahead with his plans to sell her to a good London bordello. She stays there five years and learns the difficulties and dangers facing a woman of her occupation. When she is thrown out through no fault of her own, she decides to make the best of it and wagers the men who caused her downfall to make her the best courtesan of her time and she becomes that through luck, self improvement, hard work and intelligence.Lizzy is as steadfast as her literature namesake and she is a women who has heart and warmth in a business where it is every woman for herself. Her breaking her own rule of never falling in love is surprising and dangerous. Rooting for Elizabeth to make it through the pitfalls of age, fortune and time is easy. The story never flags and the pace keep you interested. The whims of fortune that takes Elizabeth off the street and makes her a part of the great or important men of her time gives you a snapshot of the Georgian era. I cannot recommend this story enough.

Loved the beginning of the book. Hale writes a credible account of Georgian England, the plight of an unprotected girl that ends up with a predictable outcome. When I picked up the book, I had no idea I was reading an account of an actual historical figure. Life in the high priced brothel was both interesting and brutal, but the book lost steam when Elizabeth Armistead has her Eliza Doolittle moment. It became repetitive and I skimmed more than read the second half. Still, you can't deny the subject is fascinating and as it is based on truth, and interesting read.

I think this book is an excellent read for several reasons.1. The perspective of character. Its really rare in regency romances for the main character to be a courtesan. 99% of these regency romances follow such a formulatic pattern you could just switch the names out of the characters and change a few royal titles and have the same book with a different name.2. The characters are well fleshed out and likable. I found myself cringing thinking of how the main character became to be in her profession but indeed she ended up on the better end of the spectrum of the profession she joined. I was cheering for her when she decided she wanted to be the BEST courtesan in all of England. I even liked the male characters who she interacted with - even some of her clients.3. The plot isn't predictable. There are twists and turns I didn't see coming at all.So yes this is a book I will be keeping on my Kindle to reread as I think thats the measure of a good book- if you desire to reread it or wish for a sequel in the series.

I was searching for a Christmas gift for my 13 year old niece whose mother mentioned she's been falling into the girl politics and following a "mean girl" for a while, to the point that teachers noticed a drastic (for the worse) change in her personality when she was around a specific girl. I kept finding a bunch of religion based books that, while helpful, were not giving the message and in depth explanations I wanted for her. This book is great for that questioning teen that likes to know the reasons behind everything, why she should do things, why she may feel certain ways sometimes, why people behave as they do. She opened it on Christmas and disappeared for a little over an hour, reading the whole thing in one sitting. Definitely a great book! I found the opening pages that described female behavior seen in primates to be enlightening and interesting as well!

This is the book I was always looking for in the 1990's when I was a teen. I am so glad to have it now, however for my daughters who will be teens in just a few years. Not only does the book give great insight into how we as females act toward each other and how we react to it, but it also has great advice on how to stop the vicious cycles we put ourselves into. The book is full of quotes and even website resources to help out with some of the more difficult issues at hand.I have to say also, not only teens can benefit from this book, but really any woman of any age can gain something from this book. I found not only great advice to help me in my own life, but also some great pointers that I could give to my 9 and 6 year old daughters, now!I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, I guaranty you will walk away from it with something that will help you in your day to day life no matter what your age or situation.

I am in my mid 40's and picked up on this book out of curiosity as to why I witness the same pattern amongst girls and women over and over again, years after I finished high school, or junior high school for that matter. Ms. Burton actually addresses the issue of why most girls and certain women have a tendency to be abusive towards their gender.This book is a very easy and quick read as it is also eloquently and simplistically informative. If more people read this book and comprehended the message, I believe that we would see some improving civility within, not only the female gender, but, for society as a whole.

Helpful for my daughter who was experiencing some nastiness from a girl in class. As with books of this nature, it does paint with a broad brush, but I really like the long perspective she takes. There are no good guys or bad guys, just good and bad ways of dealing with things. I'd recommend.

Girls Against Girls is a very good book written by an author who cares about girls and wanting to take a stand against bullying and anti-girl violence.Bonnie Burton's book is a must read for every girl, teenage girl, woman, and parent out there whether you're a victim of bullying yourself in life or cyber bullying. Go get it, read it, and be educated.

This book is just what I needed. I only wish it was around when I was a teenager. I'm a grown woman & it made me realise I wasn't alone in all that I've gone through. Not only did I read it twice, I sent it to my niece who is reading it with her mum.It's a great reminder we're all human & not to sweat the small petty comments people make about us. Thanks Bonnie!

This has to be one of the best, if not the best ever written account of the genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda.The storytelling in the book will captivate your mind and take you on an unforgettable journey. More important than the storytelling is the story itself: the journey of four young Tutsi children traversing a dark forest filled with wild animals... except that the wild animals are in fact humans â€œHutusâ€ with machetes and the dark forest is in fact their own â€œused to be safeâ€ neighborhood. Towards the end of the journey, the children learn that their parents and many of their other siblings didnâ€™t make it.The reader of this book is introduced to the complex nature of the genocide: For example, Mr. Habimana, leader of the killers who on one hand was responsible for shedding blood of Tutsis and on the other hand was an angel on the path of these 4 Tutsi children.The author, Kaka, is a friend of mine and neighbor of many years; and Rousseaux, Kakaâ€™s little brother and one of the 4 kids in the story, is my high school friend. I am shocked and ashamed that all these years I was completely unaware of their story, but Iâ€™m also deeply encouraged by their general awesomeness and kindness despite the atrocities that befell them and their family. Now I am left wondering how many stories of my close friends I have yet to hear!I applaud Polie (Kakaâ€™s sister) for her courage to clean their familyâ€™s remains and to give them the dignity they deserve, which also helped bring some closure. I couldnâ€™t get over how she held her dadâ€™s cranium for several minutes and I could just picture a stream of emotions that was going through her head. For one more time, a girl was holding her dad.I am thankful for having had the honor to read this incredible autobiography!Iâ€™m thankful for Kaka and his family for having had the courage to relive these dark moments in order to bring these memories back to life for all of us to read and to educate ourselves. I hope that many people will read your story and I pray you stay courageous in your lifelong healing journey.Since reading this book, I am following into Kakaâ€™s footsteps and saying my daily prayer, asking for the strength to be good, to do good. Great story. Itâ€™s hard to believe that humans can treat others like the Hutuâ€™s treated the Tutsis. Once you marginalize and dehumanize a class of people atrocities like this will naturally follow. Think of the holocaust and how the Jews were dehumanized over the years leading up to the killing. This book is intense at times but worth reading. Thanks for telling this story.

This is the most incredible story of survival, love and tribute to family, and a reflection on forgiveness and healing.Please check out the book Angels on My path. It was written by my friend Jean Leonard Kagabo (Kaka), one of the most incredible people I have ever met. It is rare to come into contact with someone that is so positive, open, fun, enganging, reliable, and humble. I am truly lucky to have met him. I knew pieces of his story and that he had survived the genocide in Rawanda, but I had no idea how truly amazing his story was until I read this book. He survived the unthinkable to share his story with the world It is a story that needs to be heard.

'Angels on my path' is a poignant true story of Kaka(Leonard Kagabo), his experience of life in Africa and in particular, his experience of the Rwandan Genocide in the early 90s. Kaka chronicles life as a young boy growing up in a large family(with farm animals) and a country with meager infrastructure.His love for his family is evident in his fond recollection of childhood memories. He talks about having to walk 2-3 hours everyday to attend school. What follows, is a recollection of the horrific mass killing targeting his people (Tutsi), a minority in Rwanda. Kaka's path to safety is paved by 'Angels', or heroes who defy the chaotic and destructive forces driving the Genocide, to stand for what is right and just.If you think you understand Genocide, or if you wonder why people in certain countries seek lands foreign to them and leave their homes behind, this story could give you a lot of insight.As someone that knows Kaka personally(albeit for a short time), I feel that his friendly and personable demeanor despite all that life has thrown at him, is a testament to his values and to human perseverance in general. I cannot imagine how difficult it was to share this story. Thank you for doing so Kaka.

I read Alida's last book and loved it so I was a little worried that this started out so serious. From eating disorders, the author's revelation that she was an a*hole in order to be cool and how to out yourself as a Feminist, Nugent's topics are a little more serious than her last book. But she still has a smart, original voice that can discuss makeup, giving her virginity and what it means to be a Feminist.I think many people can relate to Nugent and hopefully her book will help women that are "too cool" to have any other women friends.

Reading "You Don't Have to Like Me" is reminiscent of sitting down and chatting with a girlfriend over a glass of wine. Alida Nuget artfully discusses what it is to be a woman and a feminist in a funny, relate-able way!

An easy and inspiring read! Finished in two days! A great introduction to feminism and makes you truly want to be the bad ass woman we all are!

What a great read! Funny, honest and entertaining. There are so many nuggets of feminists wisdom combined with quality jokes/stories I found it difficult to put it down.

Witty, funny, and inspiring. I absolutely love this book. Definitely a great read.
