I received the hardcover books today (prime shipping). I also picked up the problem book. As a basis for comparison, I used the 1966 edition that I also own. I picked up the new set as FLP set are among some of my most favorite physics books and I wanted to own it in a relatively error free version. I read the FLP long ago and now wanted to read it again using the new edition.Here is my assessment of the quality of printing of the new Millennium edition putting is side by side with the 1966 edition.The binding is quite nice and the books are good looking. The pages are not glossy at all but the quality of paper is not great. The print however is not good at all. The letters are 'thin' and rickety and harder to read compared to the original red edition that has nice thick bold black letters printed. They are readable if direct light is shining on them, however, they do cause eye strain and require effort to read. All FLPs (old and new editions) have a lot of room on the right margin and this is nothing new. However, the left margin for the Millennium edition is too close to the spine making it awkward to read. The pictures are however, nicely done and so are the math, the formulas, and the equations. In short, the printing of the Millennium edition does not do justice to the excellent content. My advice for People who are contemplating purchasing the new millennium edition is to skip it and try to acquire one of the older versions in good condition and deal with the errata online. I have not decided yet whether to keep mine or send it back. I love FLP but the printing quality of the Millennium edition does leave a bad taste in mouth. I completed my last Physics class in 1964, and I still go back to these lectures from time to time simply because they're a joy to read.OK, I'll admit I spent 35 years developing system software and I have a life long love of math and science, but I think these lectures are accessible to anyone who wants to actually understand what physics is all about. Dr. Feynman is able to present the concepts in a way that gets past the "here's the formula, memorize it" approach that many introductory presentations have been reduced to. If you persist, you will be rewarded with an understanding of how all those odd sounding bits fit together and at least some idea of how it all works.Taking on these three volumes is a daunting task, but if you truly want to grasp this material, you won't find a shorter or easier path to getting there. You can read all kinds of popularizations relating to the voodoo of quantum mechanics, the time twisting of relativity, and the unfathomability of the smallest and the largest scales of the universe, but if you want to glimpse the reality behind the magic you need to recognize that a lot of very, very smart people have spent the past few hundred years sorting it out. The fact that all this can be made comprehensible to us mere mortals at all is a major accomplishment.

Of course the substantive content is beyond reproach, but it remains a challenging read, regardless of one's educational background.However, if you are reading the Feynman Lectures with Kindle for the iPad, be aware you will be disappointed in the formatting -- when inline mathematical expressions are rendered, these formulas are not properly displayed. Speaking with the editor of the Feynman Lectures, he informs me that Amazon has not updated the Kindle software for the iPad to support the newer mobi standard (or Amazon delivers the old .mobi version to iPads instead of the newer .mobi standard?). He informs me that publishers generally are complaining to Amazon about this problem for some time.

Autodidacts and self-starters will be pleased.The layout is well-crafted, the language is timeless (not archaic, despite being written a half-century ago), and the development (exposition) of the content is arranged to accommodate "cover-to-cover" study, intermittent consumption, or to serve as reference. In fact, some Lectures (chapters) point to previous Lectures "for review" - helpful if you want to start from the middle.Though pre-exposure to- (or familiarity with- ) Calculus (particularly integral), Vector analysis, Probability, and other mathematical disciplines, operations/transformations/functions/series (Lorentz, Fourier, Number Theories, etc.) may help "feel out" the proofs more intuitively, each is presented with its corresponding Physical principle, as the need arises.In fact, this reviewer finds the coverage of mathematics (which contains many proofs) to be as lucid and well-reasoned as the Physics content!For putting together a working knowledge of Physics, in the pursuit of other interests, this reviewer continues to be excited by the lessons in these books.No doubt they will be admired by many other audiences, too.Then of course, no thing is for everyone. It gets deep quickly, and may be more thorough than some folks need or want. It's an overview in some sense, but the methodology is intense and takes a LOT OF MATH. Be sure you know what you're buying before you get into it!Happy reads

The author is a very clear writer and makes these short biographies very entertaining and interesting to read. The stories are engaging and offer insight into human nature. A very useful mirror for our own behaviors sometimes.

This book is filled with windows into the the lives of people who did or tried to do very interesting things, and never had their stories told until now. Very interesting slices of life. Fun to read.

This is a great book. A current trend in popular history is to write histories of great people who achieved success but who are not household names (consider the book "Longitude"); Paul Collins turns this idea on its head by writing the stories of 13 people whose ideas, frankly, did not have a lot of merit, but who were famous in their day.The title story, Banvard's Folly, tells the tale of the artist John Banvard -- world famous in the 1850s, but utterly forgotten today, whose great moving panorama of the Mississippi River made him rich, but who ultimately was destroyed competing with P.T. Barnum.Other stories include "The Man With N-Ray Eyes", which relates how a French scientist believes erroneously that he has found a new source of radiation; "A.J. Pleasonton's Blue Light Special", which discusses the 1870s fad concerning the healing properties of light reflected through blue glass, and numerous others, including the story of a Shakepeare forger, a woman's quest to prove Shakespeare's works were written by Francis Bacon and others, and the development of the pneumatic train.The book is a little sad, because each of the characters really believes in their ideas, even though they are rejected by society. But instead of a happy ending, these stories all end badly for the protagonists -- they end up mocked and forgotten.The book is remarkable for its scholarship -- researching the forgotten intellectual and cultural history of a previous century is no easy task; but Mr. Collins brings the reader back into the culture of the times easily. The stories are entertaining and very amusing.

"Banvard's Folly" is a wonderful book, thanks to the talents of author Paul Collins. As you have probably gathered by now from other write-ups, this book tells the story of 13 people, once prominent, and now largely forgotten. They each earned inclusion in this book because of a grand failure of some sort. In other hands, this material could have been a tool for ridicule; but Collins strikes just the right tone here. While not forgiving his subjects' excesses or blind spots, he manages to tell their stories with a real sense of empathy. It's obvious that a lot of research went into this volume, but Collins never overpowers the reader with it; each chapter just seems to glide along. If history's lesser lights are of interest to you, you should enjoy this.

So maybe I have a bit of a crush on Paul Collins and everything he writes, but truly Banvard's Folly is quite clever. Its been a few years since I first read Banvard's Folly, but I was able to dig up my initial thoughts thanks to shelfari.Paul Collins is a genius and I love him. If I have children, they will learn history from this book (as I will home school)... these people will all be included in their lessons from when we're studying Nathaniel Hawthorne and Emily Dickinson to Thoreau and the Concord Grape. John Banvard will be discussed when learning about art and art history as well as financial wisdom. We will discuss Delia Bacon in relation to the people she corresponded with as well as when we study Shakespeare... along with her, Coates' adventures as Romeo will be a humorous anecdote to read between plays and the discussion of various acting techniques. This was a fantastic piece of history that I find amazing the world has forgotten. Let's bring these stories back for the future generations! Thank you Paul Collins for bringing them all back to life in the pages of your book.Now, I do have a child, and true to my word I have written this book into the curriculum I have been creating for her since I discovered I was pregnant. All of the 13 people depicted in this book were eventually mocked and forgotten. Even though their ideas were rejected, they really believed in themselves and their work. The author did vast amounts of research on these formerly famous people. He left no stone unturned to accurately describe them. What a clever subject for a book! My hats off to Mr. Collins.

My daughter wanted a cookbook that she could make recipies on her own. These are way too complicated. Too many ingredients. Too many steps. Even simple pankcakes has them using a blender, and the oven, as well as the griddle. These are cute dishes to make for kids, but not for kids to make on their own.

Receipies way too complicated n too many spices. A disappointment for me n grandson

My daughter loves this book! The recipes are very healthy. Pancakes are made with bananas instead of flour and sugar :) but the ideas and designs are perfect. We just tweak them a bit to suit our taste buds.I love that it is food, dessert and drinks :)

This says it’s a kids cookbook, and maybe there are kids in this world who would eat the foods in this book. I’ve just never met them. No way are any of the kids I know going to eat half the foods in this book. I, on the other hand, plan to make most of these recipes for myself! I would enjoy almost all of them.

My kids are enjoying this cookbook, wish there were more photos to go with the recipes.

Gave as a gift and my nephew who is autistic loves it and easy for him to use and he is cooking!

5yo recieved as Christmas gift and has enjoyed making a few delicious, practical recipes out of his very own cookbook. It has explanations and definitions of different cooking terms and techniques. Age appropriate for young audience that will build skills needed for the rest of their life.

Fully explains the basics of cooking and has great easy recipes for the kiddos

This is a scholarly work by an author of immense erudition who never reveals his own beliefs but gives an elaborate and clear account of the religion known as Judaism as it developed during its normative period.The index of passages cited in the work is enough alone to humble all but the most profound of scholars of the Hebrew and Aramaic and classical sources.Anyone seriously interested in Judaism as a religion should read this book.Many years ago the late Professor Leon Roth (a former Rector of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem) said to me that he regarded the book as the best book in the English language on Judaism and possibly the best book in any language on Judaism. Having read it I agreed with him and in the intervening years I have never encountered anything to change my view.Highly recommended.

This is a stunning masterpiece. Even if you don't cook you'll love it for the visual style, writing and sheer magnificence. It is an exquisite gem. The food is art. The food recipes are amazing, although a novice would find them challenging. You could get some great ideas from the book, even if you don't follow the recipe exactly. The photographs are art. It may be the greatest art cookbook ever published.

I cooked some of his recipes and they tasted amazing! I am not a good cook so it didn't look good as pictured in the book but I was surprised how it came out so well like a Michelin star restaurant quality! It takes time to prepare and cook like a whole weekend project but each step is simple and well described. I now understand why the restaurant is so expensive and will appreciate more when I have a chance to eat there (if I happen to be able to make a reservation). Here are the menus I have tried and came out really good:Canapés:* Sabayon of Perl Tapioca with Malpeque Oysters and Ostra Caviar I used different kind of oyster and didn't use caviar but still good!* "Linguine with White Clam Sauce I bought fresh pasta instead of making by myself. Garlic sauce was amazing!* Creamy Maine Lobster Broth The best way to utilize lobster body!* Blini with Roasted Sweet Peppers and Eggplant Caviar I never liked peppers and eggplant so much!Fish:* Sautéed Cod with Cod Cakes and Parsley Oil I especially liked the cod cakes.* Red Mullet with Palette d'Ail Doux and Garlic Chips I couldn't get red mullet so used different white fish instead. The garlic & egg palette was amazing!Meat:* Braised Prime Beef Short Ribs with Root Vegetables and Sautéed Bone Marrow Braised prime beef only can be a really good meal!Dessert:* Cream of Walnut Soup This was quick to make and tasted amazing!* Lemon Sabayon I used almond instead but still good.

I purchased this cookbook for my husband as a birthday gift. He loves to cook--especially when it comes to trying new techniques and dishes. He mentioned that he wanted this book, but in the regular bookstore it was $50+. Once I saw that Amazon had it discounted, I decided it would be a good idea to purchase it for his birthday that was coming in a few weeks. He has already enjoyed using it and learning about the techniques of French cooking. I've benefited from it, too, because I get to try the yummy stuff he's making! Overall, great purchase for someone who really enjoys cooking and learning some of the science behind it, too.

Got this for a friend for her bday and we both loved it. Great recipes and can also be used as a nice coffee table book because the pictures are beautiful and lots to read about. Great gift for the cost. Highly recommend for a chef or just for a normal cook that would love to visit The French Laundry one day!

I have never met Mr. Keller but after visiting a few of his restaurants I have a feeling I did. There is that much personality infused in everything you are served. I gave this book to two of my friends - a restaurant owner and a chef - and they literally worn their copies out.

I agree with other reviewers that the recipes are complicated and time-consuming, but you can apply Chef Keller's concept - small, delicious bites, served in eye-appealing layers - using your own recipes, or you can adapt his to make them simpler. I'm making his lobster broth using my own homegrown crawdads (cheaper by far) and am now serving homemade ice cream on a homemade shortbread cookie, in two complimentary layers, with a scoop of vanilla cradling a spoonful of black sesame/vanilla, topped with black sesame seeds and a mint leaf.
