The pictures in this book are really helpful, and the description of each technique are great. I've been handbuilding for almost a year and can make somewhat nice things but I would not say that I'm highly skilled. The author found a way to make the projects feel accessible but I find that I'm more likely to make something inspired by them rather than copy them. That tends to be the way I use these types of books. Sometimes I bring it to the studio with me for reference while I'm working. Of my pottery books it's my favorite. My favorite feature is that a variety of feet, handles, lids, glaze techniques, etc. are described in the sections before the projects in a way that makes it easy to combine them however you like. It also features profiles of a variety of work from ceramic artists. I've definitely gotten my money's worth.

I purchased this book w/out reading any ratings, which is not my norm. When it arrived w/ the other 2 books it was difficult deciding which to read first. This book won. The way in which Susan Halls presents the information is easy to follow and concise. She discusses the different shapes you can achieve using the pinching method, how to join to make bigger pieces, different edging, feet, handles, lids, pre-firing decoration techniques, patterns, glazing and much more. She also includes some fun projects that you can copy or make adjustments to meet your vision. I would stingily recommend to anyone that wants to go beyond the basic pinch pot and to expand their knowledge that can be carried over to other aspects of pottery.

This book held a lot of great projects, inspiration, and resources such as guides and glaze recipes. I'm a beginner, but I am able to follow the instructions easily. I've read a few other books and am in a class, but I still think this is a great start for people who want to look into pinch pottery and see how amazing it can be.

The essential premise behind Thomas Thwaites' The Toaster Project is that in this modern world of ours, we take a lot for granted. Like toasters, for instance.The 20-something Thwaites decided to create a toaster from scratch for a college project. And by "from scratch", I mean going all the way back to the raw materials from the earth. He used as his model a toaster from a local department store in England that cost the consumer just under four British pounds, or around six American dollars. Deconstructing this toaster, he determined what the various parts were made of, and set out to mine and refine the minerals and whatnot he would need to make his own. He set certain rules for himself to make the experience authentic, and had nine months in which to complete it all. Along the way, Thwaites shares his project with numerous experts in the fields of mining and refining, as well as friend, relatives, and helpful drunks, meeting with various levels of enthusiasm. There is a toaster at the end of the book. I'll just leave it at that.A fan of the late British sci-fi/humor writer Douglas Adams, Thwaites cites as part of his inspiration a quote from Adams' novel Mostly Harmless, wherein one of his main characters, a modern man from planet Earth, is dropped onto another world with only a very primitive civilization. At first, the man has big dreams of totally transforming these "backwards" people with the technology he knows from home. However, as Adams puts it, "Left to his own devices he [the modern man from Earth] couldn't even build a toaster. He could just about make a sandwich, and that was it." Instead of becoming a great transformer for their society, the primitive people make him their official sandwich maker. I suspect many of us would be lucky to even get that title if put in a similar situation.The Toaster Project was a fun, fast read. Thwaites manages to be consistently informative and funny, folding in his views on the consumer culture and its environmental impact without ever being preachy or long-winded. His humorous, self-deprecating style permeates the account, and the technical portions are never dry and boring. On top of it all, he makes you stop and think about all of our "stuff", where it comes from, the people and resources involved in creating it, and what happens to it when we are through. Thwaites posits that if we were actually paying what our possessions were truly worth in terms of the overall labor, transportation, environmental impact, etc involved in their creation, price tags would be much heavier. Even by his admittedly ramshackle accounting, his final version of a toaster cost nearly 1,190 British pounds, or 1,880 American dollars.A book that will make you both chuckle and think, The Toaster Project by Thomas Thwaites is one I highly recommend.One disappointment for me, a problem with the publisher and not the author, is that the photographs on my Kindle e-ink reader were distorted and nearly indecipherable. These photos were fair important in documenting the project. They looked fine in the Kindle Cloud app on my computer, however. Amazon, don't leave your e-ink reader users behind!

Spoiler alert: The author succeeded, mostly, in making his toaster, although he ended up making the exterior from some plastic trash he found rather than from petroleum (turns out making plastic on your own is much more difficult than smelting metal) and I don't think he managed a return spring to pop out the toast when done.Mr. Thwaites was a British art student at the time he undertook to make a toaster from the raw ingredients as a school project and in order to demonstrate how dependent we are upon a complicated web of supply of hard to refine raw ingredients, all of which require considerable energy expenditure to both extract and process. I found his travails in finding ingredients (iron ore, etc.) and processing them amusing, and his larger point interesting.

We need people to remind us of the magnitude of the giants upon whose shoulders we stand. Thomas Thwaites does a nice job of describing his journey to see just how far we've come and how astonishingly much technology and knowledge goes into even the simplest product that we take for granted. A good and thought-provoking read, especially recommended for middle and high school students.My only quibble is that the author was clearly a grad student with limited time and budget. The book is short, and I found myself wishing that he'd had more time to explore and especially to write about some of the details that get little mention. Buy the book - perhaps he'll be able to do a more expansive sequel.

This book first takes you on a really fascinating, enjoyable and nicely paced educational journey. Then without being preachy the author makes you think about our dependence on worldwide manufacturing, it's dependence on raw materials, your consumer habits and how all those are having a lasting impact on mother earth. Highly recommend.

I gave this book as a gift to my brother who is an engineer. I have yet to find anything he could not repair, restore or revamp. He is always called upon to fix things at my house! It seems in this disposable life, folks under-appreciate how things are made. I heard the author on NPR and immediately knew my brother would like this book, and he says he did. He mentioned that he found a huge technical error, not sure what that is, but he emailed the author, so time will tell who is right. (a betting person would go with Uncle Pete)

So it took me 8 days to write my PPA, day and night. About 3 nights i did not sleep at all. Stood up 24 hrs just trying to be a perfectionist.Based on my experience, and my understanding of how important it is to do a patent application right whether its just a provisional or not, I dont 100% agree with the book saying in just 24 hrs of your time you can write a patent (and I'm sure they mean that 24 hrs can be spilt across a few days). You need to take your time. The book gives you almost everything you need to write and submit your provisional.However, I would suggest that they go into more detail on how to file online simply because I had hell with a PDF font error that kept coming up after I uploaded my Specification file. The illustration/drawings went through fine but the full text document was a pain. The book simoly says if you get any errors go back and fix them. That's not good enough. Between my husband and myself, we had to search the internet to figure out how to resolve the problem.To save you the trouble, i will tell you how to fix the Font embedded error that the USPTO website gives you. The website will tell you your font isnt embedded if you save your PDF file the default way. If you just save the document with the settings MS Word already put there you may run into to trouble.What you have to do is click save as, save the file type as PDF, click on minimum size, click options, select under PDF options "ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A)". Hit ok. Then save.Once your specifaction is saved this way, the USPTO website will accept the upload and you will be able to continue.They also didnt make the part about the Application data sheet clear enough. They dont refer to actual document name which i had to figure out for myself. I used the PTO/SB/16 form which is the cover sheet required for the provisional application. If i didnt decide to improve my claims and send a second provisional i would not have noticed that I needed to submit that form just going based off the book. Yes I did not use Nolo's system to apply because you dont have to. They also let you know you can choose if to use their system or not. I guess thats why they didnt give you solid details on all the info needed for the uspto website, maybe hoping you'd use theirs. Thats a huge assumption on my end though.Anyway, I also did alot of online research before buying this book and probably half the things in the book i already knew but it still was a lifesaver in many other areas.I like how they have examples of patents in the book. It is so helpful. Overall, the book helps you out and it is written to help you skip chapters as needed so you can just get the info you want as quickly as possible. They didnt just assume you will want to read the whole book. I also like that they are sample of agreements in there too.The book is good but could be better. It should provide assistance with the challenges that occur with the online application process. I'd give 3.5 stars if i could. But thats it.Also, this book wont help you write a provisional patent application you can later convert into a non provisional patent application. It says so itself, so if thats what youre looking for something that will help you write a patent based on the standard requirements this book is not for you.Remember the provisional doesn't have to be like the standard and official non provisional. So it you want to write a provisional that can be used as a non provisional try a book for the non provisional.

Excellent book written for the common person. It is well written and great attention to detail to help make people successful.

I love this book.If you are not a book learning then dont waste your money...however if your good with it you will be filing a PPA once your done like I am.

Maybe there's some real gold in the hills; just a pity he decided to drown it in a morass of incomprehensible turgidity.It needs someone like Richard Feynman to translate it from gobbledegook into English in which case the whole book might be boiled down to a few pages.Here's a sample of the kind of nonsense you will have to deal with, sentence after sentence: "In math terms, we've seen that this flow of optimal self-organization has five features, which spell out the word FACES: Flexibility, Adaptability, Coherence (functioning well over time, or resilience), Energy (a sense of vitality) and Stability."Now just in case you're wondering, there's been no math so we haven't "seen" anything in "math terms" prior to this sentence. Furthermore, the use of a acronym that spells a word that servers no actual purpose in subsequent text but now requires additional explanation of the terms is just being "clever" for its own sake. Why not just say "resilience", instead of "coherence" and then having to explain he actually means "resilience"? Because then he wouldn't have his "clever" acronym FACES...Here's more: "Studies of well-being have found that the best predictor of health and happiness is having an integrated brain, what the researcher's call an "interconnected connectome"". Really? Citation? Guess which researcher has "found" this? You got it, Dan Siegel. How he found it, who knows; maybe it came to him in the shower. What research has shown is that there is an association between poor connectivity in the connectome and Alzheimer's disease, but that hardly the same thing as what he is claiming in that sentence. The book contains no references or bibliography, and just refers the reader to a link where this material is supposed to be, but following that link returns a 404 not found error. Which more or less describes the value I got from this book.Frankly, I suspect Siegel is thriving in this "post-fact" world we're now in, where you now have license to just make stuff up.I could go on but now I'm starting to get annoyed.

I would hesitate to recommend this book to most folks frequenting a library, unless they have a medical or scientific background. There are many paths to learning meditation and related practices nowadays, (ex. mindfulness, awareness, empathy, etc.). The benefits are increasingly recognized in our popular culture. Today you can find guidance on web sites, blogs, books, You Tube, or you can consult an expert in person. Where you seek guidance depends on the type of meditation you are inclined toward practicing (relaxation, mindfulness, dealing with pain, etc.) the length of time you plan to spend on it, frequency of sessions, and how deep you want to go.Author Siegel shares his experiences using much detail and he’s developed a Wheel of Awareness, which may be a little complicated for the uninitiated and the general public. This book uses language frequently seen in academic literature, but can be easily understood by those who want to learn.For medical professionals who want step-by-step, in-depth guidance, and readers who simply want to learn more about how our brain operates and can potentially support us, (as it does every day without our realizing it), it’s quite on target. His guidance on the use of empathy with patients is reassuring and helpful as he acknowledges the potential for becoming burnt out. His chapter describing how to reflect on kind and compassionate intention to benefit others is exceptional. He instructs on ‘integration in the brain’ in many contexts to show how our brains stimulate and support us. He’s one of those unique individuals who is willing to share his extensive medical knowledge and clinical experience and who can apply it to real-life situations. He’s done us a favor.
