Easy recipes, that never seem to fail.

I have a whole shelf of recipe books for Passover, and A Taste of Pesach is the one I keep reaching for again and again. The recipes look fancy but are actually simple to make. Directions are clear and easy. Pictures are beautiful and realistic. And the editors must have tested these recipes thoroughly because I have never had a recipe turn out badly, or had to make a major correction on measurements or flavor. Fantastic recipe book, along with A Taste of Pesach 1.

Not as good as the first . Unless u like to focus presentation and don’t mind a patchke. A lot of recipes use crepes, which are too annoying for me to make. I prefer easier and more basic recipes

I bought this for my friend's daughter, who is white. I'm white and I never had books about black leaders growing up. I think it is utterly important for white kids to learn about how black people have contributed to our culture. I never learned much about that in school as a kid. Teaching kids from a young age conditions them to see all people as equally capable and deserving of respect. Representation matters. She loves the book and loves sharing what she's learned from it with other students in her class.

 My daughter is only 1. I wanted her to really love this book but she's pretty small. Fortunately, she loves the pictures and it's the ONLY book she brings to me at bedtime for not only the photos but it's long for a small baby so we haven't said "The end" yet. This author is talented in her photos of little women depicting leaders. It's informative where even I learn as I read! The wording is easy to understand and there are links in the back to get more information and do extra research. I absolutely love this book.

Beautiful illustrations with a one page summary of each woman's life. Covers more women than I anticipated, which is a bonus. I love that there is a book covering women from Black history all in one place. I want my four girls growing up to know about women of all races and time periods that have made a difference, not just white girls/women who look like them. I think for women to really move forward in our world, we all (men and women) need to understand all women and their unique contributions in their unique spheres, so thank you Vashti Harrison for providing this beautiful, informative, and well done product so we can have this learning tool in our home for my girls to grow up reading these women's stories.I included an example of what each Bio page is like. So cute and beautiful and easy to read!

I’m a 28 year old woman and I bought this book for myself! I am completely in love with how soft the cover is and the illustrations are beautiful! This book was needed! I really really hope the author comes out with a book about Bold Men in Black History also

I purchased this book for my daughter not realizing the bios were as in-depth as they are. I say the illustrations and sort of assumed it was a book geared toward a younger crowd. I’m so glad that I was wrong. The bios included in the book range from women I’d heard of and studied to women I was glad to be learning about. While the bios are in-depth and include complex words, my toddler will sit two to three bios at a time. And I know as she gets older she’ll sit through more and we can discus both the history (and the new vocabulary).I love it. I hope to see more from Vashti Harrison soon.

I preordered and was bursting with excitement to come home to the package on release day. My just turned 5 year old and I both loved the size, quality, and illustrations of "girls who are brown like me." We decided to read about one of these women each night at bedtime.I tried to start at the beginning, but we haven't yet talked about slavery and I shudder to explain its horrors to my precious little girl, so I decided to start at the back (Dominique Dawes, gymnast). This reverse historical order seems to resonate well with a young child.I like the encyclopedic style, with each narrative standing on its own. There is enough said about each woman's childhood to which a little girl can connect.Excellent work! We are proud to have this addition to our home library. Thank you, Vashti.

Hands down this is one of the cutest and most fulfilling purchases that I have made for my little girl. The illustrations are heartwarming and beautiful, but the information on each of the inspiring leaders is awe inspiring. It's such a great way to teach my little one about the potential she has in her life. I'm planning on gifting it to all of my friends who are expecting babies and have little ones at home.

The Facercise program is amazing. The book is very difficult to follow, unfortunately. I ended up buying the video for it that’s also available on Amazon, and once I *saw* the exercises performed, *then* the book made sense! If you were to buy only one (book or video, which cost $25), I’d say go for the video. For the first 5 days I did the exercises twice a day, and saw dramatic results. I continue to do them every evening before bed, for months now. That’s because whenever I stop for a couple of days, I see tiny reversals in the improvement I had made in my face. You really have to keep it up. But I’ve definitely noticed my jaw is tighter, my slight double chin is gone, my eyebrows are higher, and the “11’s” lines between my eyebrows are less indented. I will continue to do these face exercises because the difference is dramatic and only takes a few days to start seeing a difference (for better, when you do them, and for worse, when you don’t). The 5 Stars is for the Facercise program in general, but the book itself is nearly useless without the video, in my opinion.

The majority of this book drones on and on about the benefits of her program, rather than focusing on better descriptions and pictures for the 13 exercises it contains. There are 132 pages with approximately 100 of them being a lot of mambo jumbo chatter we could do without. Very disappointed that with all those pages only a couple photos are given per exercise that don't give a good visual of what you are supposed to be doing. I had expected more images to visually detail each phase of the exercise, but that is not how it is with this book.The written descriptions of the exercises are very complicated and difficult to grasp. Carole's explanations for us on how to perform these are not very well thought out, nor are the limited images provided . She should have more photos or supporting facial diagrams that point to each of the areas you need to touch, stretch, or rub across. I would much rather have paid for a short 35 or 40 page version of this book if it had more details, photos, and better descriptions of the exercises, instead of this lengthy novella that really doesn't focus on the reason I purchased it--how to do the exercises! Unfortunately, there is no way to return this book, otherwise I would!

I have this book on my Kindle, but I purchased it after already owning the original Facercise book by Maggio. The original book is very good and has easy-to-follow instructions of the exercises, but this newer updated version uses different people throughout the book to demonstrate the exercises. I found it much easier to follow the exercises in the first book because they were all demonstrated by one person (Maggio herself). The original book is just much more clear about what to do, and I find the exercises in the original book do produce results. I read through this newer version once and then went back to the original book. I wish i had never purchased this one.

This is an okay introduction to facial exercises, which are intended to improve tone and overall appearance of the face by strengthening underlying muscles. This book was one of the first instructional guides I saw for facial exercise. Before I ordered the book, I watched videos on YouTube that showed some exercises, not all by Carole Maggio. When I received this book, I realized how difficult it is to do the exercises from a still photo and some printed instructions on the page. I think a video, whether it is DVD or streaming on the Internet, is much better. You can see the actual movements and positions. Another important factor is your breathing and how long you hold each position. Sometimes you might count to 10 for each repetition. For another exercise it may be more than that. I believe facial exercises do work in improving the tone and appearance of the face. But you have to have good instruction and really understand each movement. To do that effectively, you need to watch a video demonstration. I've studied other programs, such as face yoga. I think you can get something out of most of them. Carole Maggio DVDs were quite expensive the last time I shopped for one. This book is more like a brochure. If you really want to follow a program and reap the benefits, find a video.

I love the concept, but am having difficulty understanding how to perform the exercises correctly based on her instructions, which are rather vague and confusing. For example, "smile with the middle of the upper lip" or "squeeze the corner of your mouth as if sucking on two small lemons" or "visualize the sides of your face moving up along the sides of your head" - what in the world does that mean? Only one or two photos are provided for each exercise. Perhaps the DVD would be better.

I wish I could tell every woman who is concerned with the aging of her face (and maybe thinking about doing something risky, expensive and unnatural) about the "miracle" of Facercise. I have used Ms. Maggio's original program, Facercise, for years and am delighted with the results. Now I do the original program in the morning and Ultimate Facercise in the evening. Of course, there is a learning curve, but once you master the simple exercises, it takes just a short, relaxing while to do them each a.m and p.m. I had a private session with Ms. Maggio (we are the same age) and I can assure you her photos are not doctored.

I started to see results in a week. I'm only 24 and my face was sagging pretty bad. I just always looked tired or bored. I started only using the forehead exercises (where my sagging was the worst) and saw lift after about three days of exercises. I've since added the nose, face filler and the one that lifts the corners of your mouth. I'm excited to learn and try more exercises!

About the Author

Gabriel Campanario is a staff artist at The Seattle Times and the founder of Urban Sketchers (www.urbansketchers.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the art of on-location drawing. Campanario's newspaper column, Seattle Sketcher, was awarded first place for blog writing in "The Best of the West" journalism contest. The blog and weekly print column, which combine location sketches and written stories, have quickly become popular in the Seattle area, where Campanario has been featured in TV and radio appearances. A native Spaniard, Campanario moved to the U.S. in 1998 and has lived near Seattle with his wife and two children since 2006. His journalism career spans two decades, working for newspapers in Barcelona, Lisbon, California, and Virginia. What a wonderful book! Gabriel Campanario, the "dean" of the American Urban Sketching movement from Seattle, takes us in a round-the-world journey in this inexpensive, paperback, but colorful and nearly coffee-table-sized volume. Numerous artists with numerous styles share their tips within the umbella of urban sketching and strut their stuff in metropolises (London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow), busy cities (Santo Domingo, Malaga, Jakarta), and out-of-the-way but picturesque locales (Semarang, El Ain, Aarhus) -- nearly sixty places in all. I am sorry, though, that within the inland cities of the USA my own architecturally rich city of Chicago didn't make the list, although Kansas City and San Antonio did. This book and the pictures within it inspired not only smaller guide-sized booklets but a charming box of 100 postcards suitable for sending or sticking on the wall. This is a great book. We're lucky here in the Seattle area where author Gabriel Campanario holds forth in the Seattle Times with his fascinating and colorful "Seattle Sketcher" column. I've lived here for all my 82 years, long before Campanario moved here from his native Spain and other places he stopped along the way. In time he's been here however, he has somehow managed to grasp and express the heart and soul of this city and the uniqueness of its people and culture.The Art of Urban Sketching is an anthology of the works and thoughts of others like him around the world who have managed to do what Campanario has managed to do, using the tools of art--pencil, pens, watercolor, ink, and all kinds of mark-making media-- to investigate and define the worlds we live in. While some call that urban sketching, others call it reportage, and either way it is a dazzling way of penetrating the essence of things that is quite different than some more literal, more mechanical way of SEEING than simply recording an uninterpreted image unsullied by human intervention.I'm only about one-third of the way through this book, but I am totally captivated by the wonderful images of dozens of urban sketchers around the globe. And I am equally moved and informed by their descriptions of what they do, what they seek, and what they receive from their efforts. These various testimonies are even detailed down the eminently practical level of identifying the specific tools they use which is particularly useful to anybody else who wants to start with how-to-details. Here's where I scratch "thoroughly" and bring up a significant annoyance.This book is comprised of wonderful images and rich, useful text. The text type however in the great majority of places insanely small, maybe as small as 5 or six point type, sometimes skinny, sans serif, light-bodied font version, overprinted on maybe 30% tone panels of gray that make the text an absolute b------ch to read. Elsewhere fonts printed in shades of GRAY make reading as hard as trying to read in a coal mine with the lights out. The typography in this book make reading and truly enjoying this book and its messages a real challenge for anybody with anything other than 20/20 vision.As a lifelong advertising creative director responsible for supervising both writers and artists in creating communications upon which clients were spending huge amounts of money, I had a constant battle with art directors and graphic designers who regarded words as "gray matter," not something to be understood and responded to, but as a design element that in their minds only needed to make a page look nice at a glance and not get in way of the graphic art.The pages of Campanario's wonderful book do look nice. But they are an absolute bugger to read if you care to find out what the artists have to say other than in their drawings. Too bad. But don't let it stop you from buying this fine book. Get a magnifying glass or annoy some artist by getting him or her to read it out loud to you.

David Jamieson Bolder is currently head of the World Bank Group’s (WBG) model-risk function. Prior to this appointment, he provided analytic support to the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) treasury and asset-management functions and worked in quantitative roles at the Bank of Canada, the World Bank Treasury, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He has authored numerous papers, articles, and chapters in books on financial modelling, stochastic simulation, and optimization. He has also published a comprehensive book on fixed-income portfolio analytics. His career has focused on the application of mathematical techniques towards informing decision-making in the areas of sovereign-debt, pension-fund, portfolio-risk, and foreign-reserve management.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Quammen is a master science writer, on the level of Sagan, Asimov, and Schaller. This book belongs in every public library and should be required reading in high school and college science classes. Wonderful; poetic; informative. Quammen has the gift of making difficult concepts easy to grasp. He provides fascinating insights to many of the lesser-known scientists whose work has been largely eclipsed by more famous luminaries such as Darwin, without doing disservice to Darwin himself. I love this book.

This is surely one of the most important books on the environment to come out of the latter part of the 20th Century. It is highly readable for anyone who is really interested in how we have come to the environmental place we're at today, particularly in regard to species extinction. If you are familiar with Quammen's works then you know that he is a very gifted writer and explainer. In Song of the Dodo, he teaches by combining history, environmental science, personal experience and anecdotes--not to mention his wonderfully impish "gossip columnist" quality when he describes personalities and academic battles over major biological questions. That said, he is always respectul of the scientists he interviews and of their work and goes to great lengths to really understand it so that he can give his readers the most accurate version possible of the material he covers. Quammen traveled extensively to research and write this tome, visiting many islands and archipelagos that were, and I assume still are, used as models for how extinction happens on continents when we break up the natural landscape, leaving only patches of it that become like islands for the wildlife living on those patches. There is just so very much in this book! You will read both heartening and heartbreaking stories of attempts to save species on the brink of extinction. So much of this book seems deeply personal for Quammen and for the people he engages with. It is long--about 600 pages--but I swear I learned more than 600 pages worth in reading it. Toward the end of the book I could feel that little shift in my mind, that feeling of having broadened and deepened my understanding of something very important. I am excited to move next to Quammen's new book, The Tangled Tree. I would also recommend a new book to read in conjunction with Song of the Dodo, and that is The Human Planet: How We Created the Anthropocene.

This is a great book for anyone who has started a journey learning about Evolution but wants to understand a crucial ingredient that led to the discovery of Evolution; Island Biogeography. David Quammen is a gifted writer that understands his readers want the soul of the science rather than algebraic formulas, but who can handle key concepts. This book details a lot about pivotal figures of biogeography from Alfred Wallace to Robert MacArthur and EO Wilson, taking you into the history of it and then later expanding on issues of conservation that biogeography relates to. It’s also filled with tearful episodes that I won’t spoil, but needless to say that this book is a serious call to action for anyone to do their part.

Quammen is truly becoming one of my favorite authors. As a naturalist, the topics he writes about are interesting to me, but that's only a fraction of his charm. He also has a very anecdotal and "friendly" writing style that I find very engaging. How can I not be charmed by a man who concludes his chapter on biogeographic logarithms with, "Hello, are you still with me? Sorry about all that." He knows his audience.It took me a long time to read this book not because it wasn't interesting, but because it covered a wide-range of related topics. It was as if several good books had been rolled into one.The book focuses on biogeography. Quammen talks about the great people who've contributed to the field (beginning with Darwin and Wallace, of course,) and also talks about island extinctions (as they have been much more numerous than continental extinctions).I found the stories about Darwin and Wallace fascinating. The chapters on rare, extinct, and (unfortunately) introduced species were the best part of the book for me. He also talks about recent studies and debates like SLOSS. Then Quammen ends the book with his own trip to Aru after years of carrying around a copy of Wallace's The Malay Archipelago.My one criticism is in regards to the Kindle edition due to the page numbers and percentage. When I finished the book, it said I was only 60% done even though the chapters before the glossary end around page 600 out of 695. That's not 60% Kindle.I recommend this book to anyone with interest in islands, habitat carrying capacity, and the history of natural sciences. It's a sober topic and an eye-opening read, but Quammen throws in some of his charm and wit as needed and expected.

This is a dense book that takes a lot of attention, but it's well worth the effort. Quammen writes in a surprisingly breezy style for what is, in the end, a scholarly book. He talks about Darwin and Wallace and others and examines both how species originate and die off, with particular attention to the biology of islands. I'm still working my way through it, but it is engrossing, and, by the way, although I often read books on line, it's a book like this that reinforces the value of print, as I go back and forth to re-read some previous passage that sheds light on a new idea and mark pages that I want to come back to. Again, it's a heavy (both literally and figuratively) book, but I recommend it highly.

Having read the grid thoroughly I am deeply impressed with this book. I had also read the author's first book and was impressed. The author goes into a lot of detail in the thought process between why he says things should be the way they are. These include references through out the book to writings from the titans of business theory such as Drucker, Porter and the more practical guys such as Munger and Buffet. Practical examples of real businesses are also used to demonstrate how the grid would have provided valuable insights if used by those businesses correctly.As someone who works actively everyday in business development for services I learned a lot from reading this book, particularly the sections on pricing and intellectual property. I think for someone who is inexperienced in business or considering starting their own business this is a great book to read and understand that a business is a holistic entity where everything needs to be kept in balance and a too great a bias on one part will erode your value and therefore profits from another direction.

This does not read like your regular boring business book. It feels like Matt Watkinson is sitting across from you, walking you through all the fundamental and advanced aspects of every part of your own business in person. Here's the crazy thing: while you are getting the education of a lifetime and becoming an expert yourself, you are also being entertained – Matt is a genius with a thorough sense of humor. If you are reading The Grid and are not having a serious light-bulb-moment every few pages, you're probably ready to write your own book.
