Alright, sugar, I'm going to just come right out with it and say if you are looking for something that will be an accessory to your charm school book of manners or even just a dictionary of Southern terms, keep looking. This little book of Rivenbark wit is a series of little thoughts, ideas and blog postings that are her trademark work.Miss Celia delivers and stands tall with her ability to put in text those naughty things we were all thinking. Sit back and enjoy a little leisure time with a glass of sweet tea and let her voice bring back memories of sitting around kitchen tables listening to the ladies talk (and gossip) and feel good when you smile at things your mama may have taught you weren't ladylike. Go ahead. I dare you.As for you ladies that are not Southern, please take a peek and know we are all the same at heart.
I'm a big fan of Celia's writing and snatch up everything she writes so if you like funny sarcastic and yet authentic Southern writing, then this book will keep you laughing until your ribs hurt. Don't sweat it- just buy it and read it. Then share it because it's too flipping funny to keep to yourself.
What a hoot! Celia Rivenbark never fails to put in writing exactly what I think in certain situations but never dare to say. Her take is honest,straight forward,and hilarious because we have all been through the same situations and met these type of people and are annoyed,but have no idea how to handle the anger and ill will they create. Celia has no problem with that at all. The best part is you can read one chapter,get your chuckle for the day,the come back later for more and not miss a beat. She takes the everyday trials and tribulations and turns them upside down.Not sure if the best part is about line jumpers or the Christmas newsletters,both had me laughing so hard I cried. Just like George Carlin and Bill Cosby, she makes everyday,mundane things very funny,and with no four letter words,as she is a southern lady....I think the best part of any of her books is that you can re-read them in 6 months and still laugh just as hard....
As a native southerner I get a little scared when other natives write books about us. Well not me ALL of us. But the "us" that make us look bad.I let my friends read it first. Clearly I had nothing to worry about. From start to finish a poignant and accurate depiction written in glorious southern color. I hope my beach free wifi holds out long enough for me to finish the downloads of her other books.
This is a book of hilarious anecdotes that are spot on! -- & are best read out loud with one or more girlfriends! I have given this book so many times that I keep a few on hand. For friends confined for a (seemingly) long period of time & recovering from surgery or illness I put together a gift bag or basket of small, inexpensive but useful items--to be opened one a day. I always include this book..laughter IS the best medicine!
I love this author. Any southern woman would benefit from reading any of her works. It brings a sense of home to us southerners and the author can capture everyday scenarios with so much humor and wit. She will keep you coming back.
As big fans of Celia Riverbark, who makes her home in the Wilmington, NC area near where we live, it is a joy to read her latest creation. She continues her quirky, good natured and sharp witted look at life with this latest gem in her string of hits. If you are not already a Celia fan, you will be after reading this latest effort. Highly recommend!
I've read several of Celia Rivenbark's books and they are amusing but I wonder if she's run out of what made her early books funny. There's nothing wrong with this book but if you're looking for laugh-out-loud stories, this just doesn't make it. I really like a humor break from time-to-time so I certainly will continue to at least look at her future publications with the hope that her former spark re-appears.
