Good humor throughout along with a real view of day to day life in Russia.Liked how excited he was to live and work in Russia and how he had to always make sure they knew he was Canadian, not American.Nice development of characters and relationships ~ descriptions of his environment were very visual and complete.Sometimes though, I thought the author was a bit "full of himself" and the ending was a bit of an anti-climax (for all involved).It left me with a uneasy feeling.Loved the first 7/8's of the book ~ but that is life.Worth the read...especially the simple task of taking a bath.
This is a terrific piece of work. Antonson's observations on the minutiae of day-to-day Russian life make this book a must-read preparation piece for anyone contemplating a holiday or extended stay in the country.Against the somber background of a proud and great nation falling deeper into despair, Antonson's own antics and shenanigans with a female cast of thousands provide much needed comic relief. But such occasional lightness of tone does not detract from the insight on the page here. Antonson tells it like it is, and whilst doing so makes the reader party to his own adventures and escapades.Ultimately, this is a powerful and well considered portrait of a two superpowers in decline: Russia. And Antonson.

I have known the author for years, he grew up with my children, so it was very unique to read his book. I really am enjoying it.
I just finished Brant Antonson's account of his year teaching English in Russia, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was unexpectedly humourous, wonderfully descriptive, and contained just enough day-to-day minutiae to paint a clear and realistic picture of modern day life in Russia. Anyone that has ever taken a year off to go teach English in a foreign country will identify with many of the challenges the author faced, and will appreciate his self-deprecating humour as he recounts them. An open, honest and unselfconscious account of an exciting and challenging year abroad - highly recommended.
Interesting personal insights. This book gave me a look into real Russia, through his experiences an time living in a non tourist fashion.
A great read.... amazing insights on what it is really like to live overseas!
