Review

"This is a good collection, as it shines a light on why this series has existed for so long, but also how it's changed. The essays by the multiple voices give different perspectives, from the daughter of Jerry Siegel to a professor of journalism. This work also offers two new stories, a long-lost Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster story, and another one from Paul Levitz and Neal Adams. I suspect this -- combined with the 1,000th issue -- would be a fine way to honor the character and gain a sense of what makes it so iconic. You're guaranteed to gain a better sense of comic history by reading this book." -- David Brooke"Taking a walk through the evolution of the character is an incredible journey. I was struck by the varying art styles, plot lines, and character development, especially in dialogue. From Brainiac to Supergirl to Earth 2, the selections cover a great variety of Superman's mythos. It couldn't have been easy to pick the selections, but the editors really did right by Siegel and Shuster. The book really shines in the commentary and a few certainly stuck out. Laura Siegal Larson's homage to her father in the introduction was a touching and heartfelt dedication to the determination and focus of the artist. Marv Wolfman's story of visiting the DC office in Manhattan in the 60s touched on the passion of the fan and the joy of discovering a new story. And Larry Tye's piece 'Endurance' speaks of Superman's staying power in an ever-changing market. He so poignantly notes, 'Each generation got the Superman it needed and deserved.'" -- Paul, goodreads.com"A tapestry of old material and new, [the book] reprints noteworthy stories fromSuperman's history, beginning with his introduction in 1938 all the wayto recent adventures in 2012. Key moments of Superman's history thatinclude the introduction of Supergirl and Superman's Fortress ofSolitude, as well as debuts of villains like Toyman and Brainiac, arerepresented. Scholars and historians present essays on that first issue of Action Comics, Clark Kent the reporter, and Superman's lasting impact on both pop culture and society, among other topics. The large format hardcover is a stylish addition to any collection of superhero comics." -- Amanda Sheriff"It is easy to see how and why Superman has endured for four-fifths of a century, especially after reading this commemorative companion piece to the landmark issue. Whenever DC decides to honor the history and legacy of their characters, theyhave a way of doing it in the most loving way possible. This book is no exception ... it's a celebration of Superman and the comic series thatstarted it all. It is very clear that a tremendous amount of time andcare was put into assembling this book." -- Mario Bennese"More than anything, this is a book where the real value is in how, between contextual text pieces by various contributors and the selections themselves, provide a sense of time and place regarding not only the creators behind the character and his supporting cast, but also in how comics storytelling was approached in each instance ... it's a nicely balanced work and clearly a labor of love in its curation with a strict focus on where everything we love about Superman got its start ... from the minds of two Depression-era kids from Cleveland ... a perfect celebration of the original (and best) superhero." -- Kyle Pinion, The Beat

I always believed that a commemorative volume should deserve an omnibus edition to cover all the angles of the Superman character. Nevertheless, this tome has many strengths to satisfy Superman fans. This tome has interesting essays by Paul Levitz, Laura Siegel Larson (Jerry Siegel's daughter), Julius Feiffer, Tom DeHaven, Marv Wolfman (narrating how he saved a classic Superman story that wasn't to be published), David Hadju, and Larry Tye. It is the graphic essay by Gene Luen Yang titled "Supersquare" that tops them all, reflecting on why Superman is always so square. His explanation is quite unique.Besides the essays, the tome includes 21 Action Comics stories comprising each decade since its 1938 original issue (2 or 3 issues per decade). As usual, there is the first story probably included in every Superman anthology, Supergirl's debut, and the debut of two villains: the Toyman and Braniac, It is interesting to see cameos of President Kennedy in two issues from the early sixties and "Too Many Heroes," an unpublished issue saved by Marv Wolfman and written by Siegel and Shuster. The wedding of Superman and Lois Lane from Earth 2 is perhaps one of the best gems among these stories, and undoubtedly, Lois Lane's discovery of Superman's identity couldn't be missing here. In addition to this, the debut of Zatara the magician, the Vigilante, and the Human Target (from the early seventies) are included in this tome. The weakest story in this collection is Paul Levitz's "The Game." In this story, Superman palys chess with Lex Luthor. When the latter loses, he traps Superman with green kryptonite chains, but Superman is ready with a Mother Box borrowed from Scott Free (Mister Miracle). Personally, I thought that this story was quite lame and too simple to conclude this commemorative issue. At the end of the volume, there are pages dedicated to pivotal covers representing each decade. It is a pity that instead of just showing covers, the stories behind these covers should also had been reprinted.Overall, the volume is satisfactory. It has a beautiful binding and its contents are neatly presented. It is a job well done. Content-wise, its strengths are found in the essays as mentioned previously, but its weakness is found in the limited amount of material that could have been included here pointing to the several developments of Superman in Action Comics. The Merv Wolfman presentation of the Jerry Siegel unpublished story was a great contribution here. On the other hand, including a fifty-page issue covering just one story waisted opportunities to present other new stories. Although not a bad volume, it could have been better.

Wonderful selection of comics stories from the past 80 years of Action Comics, with a number of interesting essays, including one by Jerry Siegel's daughter Laura, as well as a previously unpublished, 12-page Jerry Siegel story rescued from the wastebin by Marv Wolfman. Curiously, the reproduction of Action Comics # 1, while seemingly provided from a better copy than other reproductions I own, introduces an error in panel 39 (Superman man says, ... your going to get!, rather than, ...you're going to get!) which is absent from my other copies. It's a great volume, and I'm glad to own it.

Very entertaining book. Has Superman stories through the years, so that you can see how Superman changed, how comic art changed, how comic storytelling changed, etc. I read all the Silver Age Superman titles (as I worked in my dad's drugstore, and I could read the comics while handling the front of the store cash register sales.) I was a fan of 50's -60's Superman, until Spiderman and Fantastic Four showed the way for comics to be much better in the later 60's. But this Action book enabled me to see the "new way" they draw and present Superman. Well worth the purchase.

Nice looking book! Decent collection of stories from the past 80 years. Obviously can’t pkease everyone, considering the number of classic stories and storylines to choose from. Happy with the purchase and a long time Superman fan. Also, the product arrived in great condition and $5-$10 cheaper than everyone else.

Hard to believe the Man of Steel has been around for 80 years. This book covers some great comic book stories covering that period. Fun to see the evolution of this iconic character. It’s a must have for any Superman fan.

I like the book, but when I pre-ordered, it was titled Action Comics #1000. I see it has changed in intervening months, which doesn't seem quite fair, because now I have to find Action Comics #1000 elsewhere after thinking I had a guaranteed copy. Anyway, a really good book, well designed and a great overview of Superman's 80 years since Action Comics #1.

It looks like a great book. Just thumbed it and it has stories that look good and representative of Superman in Action comics. For the most part I read Superman comics so this anthology of Action comics stories has many I haven't read. I wanted to give it 5 stars, but the cover drawing of Superman is terrible. He looks like a Neanderthal goon. How can an artist give him that low brow look? It signals lack of intelligence and has done for decades.

65+ years of following/reading/watching Superman. This book was great at providing history and stories. Well worth the purpose.
