I waited for a long time for the second book from The Children House series and it went beyond my expectations! I read it in a few days and couldn’t put it away. Shocking resolution. I can’t wait for the third book.
This author has a wonderful way of writing, it is a pleasure to read. I didn't want to put the book down. It makes me want to visit Iceland, she involves us in her characters lives, I have bought several of her books as they are so well written.
This is the follow-up to The Legacy, which also featured the police investigator Huldar and the child psychologist Freyja.It seemed to me that the spark in Yrsa’s writing has gone out, I found it to be tedious throughout. The plot is shaky, the police are inept, all of the characters are repulsive, and the Icelandic backdrop is minimal. There is a strong statement about Icelandic corruption, however. I had been enjoying Yrsa’s progress as a writer until now, this is a step backwards.
Terrible events are happening and cannot reasonalby be coincidential, but which the police are unable to connect. Indeed, most of this investigation is taken up with a search for patterns that may stretch back for years. There are twists and turns, but the book also has serious priblems. First, it is simply too gruesome to qualify as entertainment. Moreover, at times the investigation is tedious and the main characters are neither interesting nor likeable.
This book was a big disappointment for me, being a devoted fan of Yrsa Sigurdardottir's novels and Icelandic crime fiction in general. While the first book in this new series (Freya and Huldar), titled ''DNA'', was aligned with the previous dark, suspenseful and gory novels of the so-called ''Queen of Icelandic Noir'', the ''Reckoning'' fell short to my expectations as it is a rather conventional police procedural crime novel which focuses more on the whodunit part rather than the horrendous atmosphere which is a trademark of the writer herself. That being said, I would like to underline the fact that this is not a bad novel, you still want to turn the pages but it lacks the graphic horror descriptions which bring goosebumps to the reader and keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time you spend reading it. I would like to think that the ''Reckoning'' is only a mediocre parenthesis to the truly talented Icelandic author's work. I am eagerly expecting the English edition of the third book in the series, hoping for the best!
