i purchased this book used and it was a treat to read, i've loved ferraris since i was a little kid and saw my first one parked and i asked my dad if it was a mustang,lol. ferraris have always had this mystic factor about them and they are what dreams are made of, ive never owned one and probably never will although the 328's with somewhat low mileage have become very affordable, this book is a insight into enzo ferrari and his life, it does have things you might not like about the man, everyone knows enzo wasn't the nicest or warmest man but he was a man of vision and normally very successful people are not "normal" in the sense of the word,the book relates his humble beginnings and in my view the luck he ran into with alfa, basically alfa let him run their racing department as he saw fit pretty much like it was his own, the tragedy of all the drivers that died while racing under his name and the lost of his firstborn at a early age are all well documented in the book, the book does have a lot of comical episodes about enzo and the way he would treat people with contempt regardless of how famous or rich they were, i enjoyed this book tremendously and i think you would too, buy it, its a good read.
Yates is no Ferrari sycophant and this informative treatise eloquently supports his lack of enthusiasm for the man and the marque. Ferrari would have preferred that robots drive his racing cars and was largely unmoved when one of his drivers died behind the wheel of one of his cars. Ferrari was singularly focused on engine power as the key to a winning race car and was contemptuous of the English "garagistes" who employed disc brakes, magnesium wheels and fully-independant suspensions long before the cars from Maranello did. He thought that buyers of his road cars were fools, and were it not for Fiat, the Ferrari brand would have ceased to exist long ago. And yet any front engine V12 Ferrari road car will easily pull in a million plus at an auto auction. Go figure.
A very well written, well researched piece of work. Yates writes with a knowledge and worldliness that far transcends the mere subject of highly coveted machines. It is not just a story of the man, but of the 20th century industrially and politically. It plumbs the depths of its subject in a manner that is comprehensive and balanced. The best book on the subject.
Intrigue that rivals the Borgias abounded in the Maranello factory where Enzo Ferrari ruled as a modern day Cesar. A self consumed and driven character, he sacrificed his family, his reputation and the life of more than one driver on a quest for racing greatness. The book is very readable, for BOTH racing fan and non racing fan. Ferrari's view of the non-racing people who purchased his cars, especialy the Americans, is openly contemptuous and hostile.
