I’m kicking myself. That’s how good this book is.I’m kicking myself, because I can’t believe I didn’t read this sooner.This series comes highly recommended by several of my trusted review sources, and, though it’s an amazing series (judging by the first book, at least), it’s also incredibly underhyped. And that makes me sad, because Finnikin has everything bookworms could possibly want in a good YA high fantasy: strong and vivid characters, a steady-yet-unpredictable plot (the twist blew my mind, it was so clever), a wonderful romance that does not overpower the rest of the novel, and solid, detailed world-building. I was so happy.I loved every single side character in this book (except for Froi, though he grew on me eventually). They’re all such fighters, so fierce and strong in their own ways (especially Evanjalin and Trevanion, both of whom I was cheering for SO HARD). They’ve all undergone hardship or trauma of some sort since the five days of the unspeakable (the name for the assassination of Lumatere’s royal family). The people of Lumatere are refugees, scattered and suffering, and I loved that Marchetta chose to portray a hurting, broken nation rather than one simply corrupt from the inside. Instead of focusing mainly on the cruelty of the current powers at hand, Marchetta focuses on the suffering and the humanity of the subjects, making their exile a matter of the heart rather than just a political issue. She characterizes the island of Skuldenore not by its boundaries or its nations, but by the people themselves and by the cultures and causes they hold.It’s something I’ve seen before, but not the way she portrayed it. It felt so fresh and so real, and my heart ached for the people of Lumatere and sympathized with their plight. I was rooting for all of these characters every step of the way.I’ve mentioned how the plot is steady, but unpredictable. What I mean by that is that the plot does not meander and stays course, but still has several twists which kept me on the edge of my seat. I won’t spoil it for you, but I’ll tell you this: You’ll think you know exactly what’s going to happen, but, once you get to a certain point in this book, you’ll completely reevaulate your assumptions.Finally, the romance. It was slow-burn and gradual and stubborn, just like the two characters it involved. I loved how fierce both of those characters are, and how they rub off of each other so well. They’re explosive, but in a slow and growing way, like rocks that create a spark, which expands into a fire that slowly warms you up. Even though they clash in several ways and they’re both strong-willed, they complement each other very nicely. (And, honestly, they’re probably one of my OTPs [One True Pairings].) Their relationship is a great reminder that nobody’s perfect and that compromise is necessary in relationships.And the best part about it? Though it’s intense, it’s only an undertone to the main plot, never distracting from the rest of the story or the characters’ purpose. I loved that, just like I loved them.If you enjoy YA fantasy and you’re looking for some great high fantasy, please, please, please check this book out. It’s very rare that I can love a book as completely as I loved this one. Books like this remind me why I love reading so much.

After reading Jellicoe Road last year and gushing all about Melina's writing, I was eagerly anticipating starting the rest of her books. While I was excited back then, it's certainly take some time for me to finally pick up Finnikin of the Rock, the first of the Lumatere Chronicles, and I finally did so as a participant in the read-along hosted by Hannah. I honestly had difficulty really getting into the story at the beginning, but eventually, a few chapters in, I found myself extremely invested in the outcome of this story and the lives of these intricately written characters. Finnikin of the Rock is not the easiest of books to read, but I found it to be well worth my while.The book was daunting to me at the start, and for the first few chapters, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. This had a lot to do with the way the story is written, which is a road block that I also encountered with Jellicoe Road. After a few chapters, my brain had adjusted to the story and I was eager to see what was going to happen from there. So, I will warn all of you - it does take some time to get invested in this novel.A core element of a good fantasy novel is strong world-building. While there's certainly still a bit of mystery left for the readers, Finnikin of the Rock boasted a nice, strong foundation of the world that this series is set in. Every single place mentioned, every culture referred to is all particular to this novel. While it may be confusing to most readers, I soaked it all up, fascinated by the little details that Melina wove into her bigger picture storyline. It helped that there was a map at the front of the book (which I took a screen cap of) to help me navigate during the journey Finnikin and company take.But what really sets this novel apart, at least for me, are the characters. Melina writes this entire cast of characters that are complex, real and surprisingly easy to relate to. Each character was memorable and unique, and I find that a week or two after finishing the novel, I'm still thinking about them all. This is not to say that I always liked every single character in the book; in fact, I'm pretty sure that I went through a phase where I teetered on the brink of hating each and every single one of them (except, perhaps, Beatriss and Balthazar) because I didn't always like their choices. I loved the fact that this happened because it just drove home the point that these characters aren't necessarily perfect or right all the time, which made them truly pop out to me.Finnikin is actually not my favorite, in spite of the fact that the story mostly revolves around him. He's been journeying with his mentor, Sir Topher, for years, visiting exile camps and trying to find a place to create a "new Lumatere" since the old one appeared to be lost to them. Finnikin grated on my nerves at times. Sometimes, he was too focused on the future and determined to put his past behind him; other times, he dwelt on the past and the people who had died or suffered after the loss of their beloved Lumatere. And there were plenty of times when I felt like he lacked courage. But the reason why I do have a soft spot for him is because this self-doubt, denial and desire to flee or forget is so very human. While I didn't necessarily agree with him all the time, I could understand him and his motives.Evanjalin is my favorite, despite the fact that I was sorely tempted to yell at her at times. She's stubborn and tough, determined and mysterious, kick-ass yet still very vulnerable. She's got an independent nature, and that often leads to her taking the road less traveled in spite of what others would say. It was her combination of strength and vulnerability that really allowed me to feel for her, and fall in love with her character. The one thing that bothered me about her was her tendency to omit the truth in conversations, often just including the details that were pertinent at the time and nothing more. While I could understand her reasons for doing so, it did bother me, especially when it was so blatantly obvious that she certainly knew more than she let on. When everything is said and done though, Evanjalin is a great character.Majority of the fantasy novels I read always culminate in some epic battle of good versus evil (innocent versus corrupt, etc). This one does not, which caught me off guard. At first, I was up in arms about it, but in the end, I realized that it could not have played out any other way. While this book is about the Lumaterans finding their way home with the help of Evanjalin, it is not about an external battle with swords and weapons (though they do appear, mind you). It is, rather, a quieter, more introspective novel - and the battles raging are mostly internal. Finnikin and Evanjalin (and most of the secondary cast) have individual issues to be dealt with, and this story shows us how they do that even as they reclaim Lumatere for their own people.This novel is another remarkably written, complex piece of work from Melina Marchetta. It's one of those novels where you really have to get used to the writing and the storytelling first, but where you'll discover that it's worth it once you've finished. I thoroughly enjoyed Finnikin of the Rock, and am looking forward to continuing the series with Froi of the Exiles this month.

Finnikin of the Rock is a rare gem in an overcrowded genre. I had purchased the series and let it sit on my shelves for over a year, bypassing it every time I went to pick up a new book. Mostly, I thought the name was odd. I should know better. Prettily named books can suck, and oddly named books can be incredible.This story is complex. The first book of the trilogy opens you up to the world by pulling the reader into the setting, firmly establishing not only the geographic aspects of the world, but also constructing the cultural standards that will remain true for the remainder of the series. Better yet, themes and characters created in this first story logically carry onto the later two books. In other words, Finnikin of the Rock is not a one-hit wonder. This book has serious teeth, and the series as a whole is an amazing read and an impressive accomplishment for Melina Marchetta.I would compare Marchetta's writing and intricacy to Kristin Cashore (Graceling). If you loved Graceling, you'll easily fall for Finnikin. This book simply has all the things that a reader can ask for: compelling characters, believable world building, humor, intelligent writing, carefully constructed story, and a nicely paced plot.

Holy crap! Holy effing crap! This book was all that I hoped it would be and more. It's been a long while ago that I read the Shining but it didn't matter, things come back to you, and I didn't even really need to read the Shining to get this book. To me, it can be read as a stand alone. I'm so glad that Stephen King was moved to write Danny's book, that I got to see him as an adult and see how the aftermath of what happened to him and his mother in the Overlook Hotel. Taking it all back to his shining and adding even more mysterious and ghostly things. I'm always pleasantly surprised when a book can get one over on me, it doesn't happen often, and it did in Doctor Sleep, a few times. This is a must read book if you're a Stephen King fan, if you've read The Shining or not or if you just want to read a really freaking awesome book!

I waited and waited for King to release this book. What works here best is the continuation of the original story that began in The Shining. Admittedly, my interest in that book (it was the first by King that I read) probably colored my experience of this book. I can see how a reader would want to start with The Shining for context here.In terms of scare factor, some of the images from this book will be with me for a long while to come. A must for King fans, but I recommend it for any reader.

A fun, fast-paced follow-on to "The Shining" but not as classic-y. I rather enjoyed this story but it almost felt too contrived, and too forced. I mean, really...Vampires with pirate names that suck psychic energy (called steam) from highly psychic people? Which make the vampires younger, more psychic and able to live many, many years more than a normal human? And these old folks are computer savvy like today's teenagers? This story almost marginalizes Dan's major-league shinning abilities he had as a kid by presenting a little girl, our heroine, who has explosively more talent than Dan. Well, I tried not to get too rational while I read this but it did make me re-read "The Shining", a much better story.

I have been a King fan since the 70s. That's right. I'm a fossil. I got hooked with his first novel, Carrie. Then had to wait for a couple of years for Salem's Lot to come out. And so it went...I would read novels and short stories as soon as they were published. My favorite King's works are: The Dead Zone; The Stand; Misery; Pet Sematary; The Green Mile; The Shawshank Redemption and of course THE SHINING! Some of his more recent works have lacked something...I don't know what exactly. Perhaps passion. Maybe he's tired - - who could blame him after all this time, really. ANYWAY, I truly wanted to like this sequel to The Shining, however, it lacked the same HORROR and originality. The character development was flimsy, in my option, and closely resembled a number of other characters from his former novels. The villains were laughable and cartoonish. The storyline was predictable and dragged horribly during the middle HALF of the book. It was hardly worthy of it's predecessor. Let's face it, THE SHINING was a stand-alone masterpiece. How could a sequel possibly live up to that?

No Sleeping Here!Three days after starting this honey by King, I am sadly through the adventures of Doc and back into dull reality. The last ten percent of the book was read while standing up in the kitchen with the Kindle on the bar so false moves would not endanger the process.Its that good. King as usual does not forget a detail from The Shining and intersects the old and new tales seamlessly. A last farewell from an earlier character was the perfect touch. King never wallows in sentimentality or plays the old cards too often. He spices the new work with a bit of the past but precisely and artfully. Reading King here is putting yourself in the hands of a master again. Its familiar, its expected and one is ever disappointed. The remarkable talent which makes this book float and soar through ones mind is one of our gifts for living at this time. Other problems and current events melt away as one volunteers to be part of the book and struggle until the end.As one who has attended some meetings and read the Big Book there was even more for me to recognize and appreciate in this work.King has empathy for folks with addictions but also knows that nothing but hard work, prayer and strength changes this situation. In addition to suggesting this book to a general readership, I also highly recommend it to our friends in AA and similar groups. If one is successful in this realm, the book is celebratory and if one needs more work, this book could help. Praise to King can never be overstated no matter what subject catches his fancy.

Look, The Shining is one of my favorite books of all time. So when I saw there was a sequel I was equal parts nervous and excited (because sometimes sequels are trash compared to the original). But this is Stephen King we're talking about, so my fears were unnecessary.I LOVED that this book showed what happened to Danny after the events at the Overlook, and didn't pick up where the shining left off. Seeing how the horrors he experienced affected him was infinitely more interesting than where Wendy got a job. And to see Dan be broken by his past and then put himself back together was incredible. The book does an amazing job of showing how your past will always impact your present, but it doesn't have to ruin it.For me the True Knot and Abra storyline was interesting, but not so much as Dan's journey. It seemed almost like they were there to give Dan something to do and a way to complete his journey. That being said, some of the scenes were just as horrific as the shining, and the characters were so interesting. King is a master of his craft.

Overall the book is very nice on first look. Good quality and bright colors. However as far as touch and feel books go I was very disappointed. Very touch item was basically the same. Nothing fuzzy, or rough, or any real variety.

I bought this as a present for my young nephew. Based on the title including "Touch and Feel" I expected this book to have much more "touch" exploration. Instead, most pages are flat print that have no special surfaces, colors or anything. There is very little for a young child to engage with. Really for $2.99 I didn't expect much, yet somehow this book managed to still fall below a very low bar.Do yourself a favor: save the few dollars and put it towards a book with richer content.

I had hoped that since it was a baby book and said it was a touch and feel book, it would have great textures for the baby to feel.This was not the case.

Cute, but not much to "feel" inside. I purchased it for children 1 1/2 years old.

This is a cute and simple book that covered a great amount of Hanukkah topics. The touch and feel part is a little lackluster; they could have done more. My daughter still really enjoyed it and wanted to look at it often.

I bought this book thinking there would be pictures that actually had to do with the biblical Jewish holiday, but I only found a bunch of drawings and pictures of cookies, Gelt and presents, which were not even very original or attractive.

Worked well as a gift for my one year old nephew

Super cute! As many people mentioned, it's not really all that touchy-feely, but who cares. Colorful, cute and there are different textures. I definitely recommend this little book.

For me, the historical context added to this book was very insightful and for the most part, the author explains how the various concepts tie in with one another. The further resources section could be more extensive – it seemed more like an afterthought – but all in all an excellent introduction to inferential statistics.

Good introduction to regression, bayes, clustering, and standard deviation. Handy if you are like me and need to learn statistics before honing in on data mining.

Nice informative intro to statistics. Very easy to follow along. Can be read in an afternoon or so. Well worth the time and low investment cost.

Its content is explained clearly. I recommend as a first approximation to statistics. even it is a very good book for teaching.

on page 68, is it an error: "... Z is found by referencing a Z-distribution table. For a significance level of 0.95, the Z-Score is 1.96"Shouldn't this be "... for a CONFIDENCE leel of 0.95..." ?

Blows the Dummies books out of the freaking water!! Clear writing that was obviously labored over and edited professionally. You read a passage once and completely understand the information. No filler at all.

I bought this book for my 9-year-old granddaughter, a 4th grade student, because she has been fascinated with Anne Frank since reading THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. I went by the product review, which said this book was for 9 - 12 year olds, and from a 4th grade level. I guess I should have paid attention to the Editorial Reviews. The School Library Journal suggests 5th grade level and up, and Booklist says grades 6 - 12. Unfortunately I did not go back and look at these reviews until I had the book and realized it is more detailed and involved than my granddaughter would interested in. I don't even think she would understand a lot of the historical background.For those who read this book, it may well be worth 5 stars. However I am giving it only 4 stars because of the product misguidance. Amazon, fortunately, had no problem with accepting the book's return.

The story of Anne Frank and her famous diary in presented in the context of world events. There are many photographs, as well as quotations from the diary, from people who knew Anne and her family, and from historians. Starting with pictures of the actual diary, the narrative starts with the Frank family's life in Germany, their move to the Netherlands, their decision to hide, and their life in the secret annex. After the occupants are discovered, they are deported from Amsterdam. The book discusses what happened to the occupants, as well as how the diary was first published and later made available in many languages and formats. There is a detailed glossary in the back.The value of this book is the photographs and first person accounts. Although the narrative is informative, the level of detail can be distracting, and there are several places where the translation is not smooth. this book is an awesome addition to any library, WW2, or Anne Frank collection! For anyone who has read her diary, it will make it come even more alive. this book is filled with glossy, colorful pictures and the prose is wonderful as well, telling Anne's story and some things you might not know. There's pictures of her growing up, the secret annex, and other Holocoust info and pictures. This is jsut a really great collector's book and you will treasure it for years to come. It's also a great size, and the cover is beautiful and glossy. I love this book, and whether you know Anne well and want to learn more, I highly reccomend adding this to your list!Happy reading!

Although it breaks my heart to see the photos and read the personal thoughts of Anne, I know it is a good reminder to make sure this kind of hatred for no cause never happens again. I feel like my own government is turning on Christians in our country. I'm getting a small since of how Jews must have felt at the very beginning of the intolerance that the Nazi government slowly forced on them.

Bought this for my 12 year old daughter who's very interested in Anne Frank. She loved it!!! Had lots of pictures of Anne, her family and the secret annex that she'd never seen before. Worth every cent!!!

I have no idea who the designer is and have never heard the podcast. This one is priced right and close enough to my normal dailies to work for me. It would likely be inspirational to the right person, but I suspect you'd have to feel analog systems are borderline decadent to begin with. I know this sounds judgmental, but after reading the first few chapters, I put the book down and thought I would not return to it. The author’s spirituality Is rooted in eastern philosophy, meditation, and mysticism, and while I have a deep respect for the practices of these traditions, I do not find eastern mysticism fulfilling in the long run. Anyway, a few days later I was bored and picked the book back up and started reading again. The following day I finished the book and I am glad I did. The author is honest and vulnerable, and she does a good job weaving the events of her personal life into her account of her time walking the Camino. I also found myself enjoying the many quotes she used to start each chapter of the book, many of which came from writers steeped in eastern thought and practice. Surprise! Bottom line - this book gets better with each chapter.

This is a good memoir, but I had to deduct two stars.While I enjoyed the memoir, the organization of thoughts, prayers, affirmations, etc., much of it was repetitive.I deducted one star for poor mechanics. While I applaud the author for hiring an editor, even editors need proofreaders. Proofreading is the last step before publishing, and it was obvious this step was skipped. The missing letters, punctuation, and incorrect wording often derailed the readability. If I have to read something three or four times to figure out why something is "off," that means something's wrong. One of those missing things was the reason. A professional proofreader would have made all the difference.I deducted a second star because the whispersync was not applied, nor was this book formatted for a Kindle Fire color reader. On my Paperwhite, the table of contents was visible, and I could click on a different day (Each day was one chapter). When I opened my color Kindle, only the front matter and back matter showed--no table of contents with chapter headings. I had to scroll through eighteen chapters to get to where I left off in the Paperwhite. Yes, I double-checked my settings. My settings were set for whispersync ON, but when I called Amazon support they told me the book was not set up properly.This is becoming a real issue among indie authors. They skimp on things that make a difference to the reader.Thank you for putting yourself out there, and thank you for sharing your story.

Overall, I liked this book and enjoyed all the neat quotes she gave for the various stages. It was a neat read for anyone about to take the Camino especially for personal growth reasons. I related very much to the battles she faced on the way and how she worked through them. My only disappointment with the book was that the part of the way that I am going on (Sarria to Santiago) she had already gotten very tired and understandably so. In that, the details and scenery descriptions she gave at the beginning began to be be fewer and fewer. By the time she got to Sarria, she was so tired and worn out I think that some details of the past part of the camino seemed fewer.What a neat story she had though and I was very pleased with my read overall. I would definitely recommend this to a Camino walker. BTW, her walk in this book was on the Camino Frances.

This was such a great read. Jennifer's ability to open up about this very personal struggle is refreshing and authentic. It really gave the reader an insight as to the real struggle of being a woman in a body that doesn't fit society's 'ideal'. Her example of what it's like to be fit and strong and able to walk over 500 miles - while at the same time do the inner work of healing her relationship with her body is a true testament to what it's like to be a real warrior while facing this very difficult and very real issue that so many women struggle with. I really enjoyed this book and feel inspired to walk the Camino!

Enjoyed the parts involving the Camino but not the New Age and guru talk.

Ms. Johnson's Camino experience was slightly different from most other author's writing in that she stayed in hotels along the way and ate at restaurants rather than staying and eating at "more pilgrim like" albuergas. And she often took cabs when she was tired or didn't desire to walk through industrial areas. .But does this make it a less-than-pilgrim walk? I personally think not. Like others, she went through a lot of "soul searching", she endured the aches, pains, and doubts, and while not stated, satisfaction of completing the pilgrimage. Her writing reflected what I believe to be real honesty. I've read probably 20 books about the Camino and I found this book, like most, to be very interesting and entertaining.

I cannot count the number of books that I have read about walking the Camino however this one is about travelling it as a tourist. Stay in the best hotels and get a taxi when your feet ache. The author's inclusion of so called uplifting quotations at the start of each chapter were easily ignored but not so easy to ignore are the detailed descriptions of every meal consumed along the way which I found utterly boring. This book is a promotion for the author's new business of running tours of the Camino. Purists and true pilgrims would not enjoy this book at all and would probably quite rightly feel this kind of mass tourism will eventually destroy the Camino. I have awarded three stars as I was entertained and did finish the book even though Spiritualism and mass tourism are not my thing.

This is an incredible read and an incredible journey. I was transported to the Camino. I knew almost nothing about the Camino De Santiago, but Jennifer's story and her transformation were inspiring and now I too want to do my own walk. Jennifer digs deep into her self and allows us to see our own potential.Read this book!! You will be transported.
