It's funny because I got this book on audible and the first time I listened I was in the car. I wasn't feeling the the first chapter - it started off a little slow - and I wanted to turn it off and return the book. But since I was driving I couldn't use my phone to turn it off. THANK GOD I kept listening because it has since become my favorite book!!!I'm on a constant quest to reduce worry/stress and live my best life and in that spirit I've read/listened to pretty much every book on the topic of happiness/self improvement over the years - you name it, I've read it. I can say without a doubt this is the best, most impactful and life changing of them all. In fact, I listen to this for 30 minutes every day to reinforce it and plan on doing so indefinitely. Do yourself a favor and read/listen to this!

I truly believe this book can help anyone lead a happier life. If you apply the principles within it, you can change your mindset and your life. One of my favorite lines, "Your thoughts, not your circumstances, determine how you feel. An absence of negative thought brings forth a positive feeling." That is so true! Think about it. The part on moods was especially enlightening for me. So many of the insights in the book are things I think we all intrinsically know but maybe don't consciously think of or apply to our lives consistently. If you're someone like me that struggles with negative thinking, ruminating over made up scenarios in your mind, or even real past events, or are prone to moodiness, I think this book will be especially helpful to you. It was very helpful to me.

Richard Carlson's books need no introduction really. They are packed with common sense methods to change the way you approach your own thinking and views of the way you interpret life. For people who have struggled trying to find happiness (and not sure why they can't) his books encapsulate ideas and methods to "take a short cut" around your flawed thinking and realize how your own negative thoughts are sabotaging your enjoyment of life - and encourages one to simply ignore these unreal, frightening phantasms that are just thoughts in your head. Definitely worth the price and highly recommend.

This book is a Must Read for those who want to acknowledge the highs & lows of moods, feelings, and generally the way the mind works. Richard Carlson's books have most definitely become an indispensable staple in my book collection. I guess you'd have to read at least 2 of his books to get some quality advice from them, although this particular book gripped me like an invisible self-psychiatrist in getting a hold of my moods, feelings, and acknowledging separate realities and the way the mind works in all of us. It goes on to discuss the 5 principles1-Thoughts2-Moods3-Separate Realities4-Feelings5-Present Momentand then chapters on applying these principles into your everyday life and how they can work for everyone. Most of this is common sense, but nevertheless a real eye-opener in how, why, and what you can do to get a grip on these principles during depressed, stressed, and 'low cycle' times that we all go through in life. Most people know what the 5 principles above are to a lesser degree, but what you didn't know Dr. Carlson fills in the blanks of how & why they affect your overall mental health and what you can do about it, to thus (hence the title) get a better heads up with what you can do to clear the fog during moody or distressful times, or are having a bad day in general. I highly recommend the book..i.e.1) You Can Be Happy No Matter What by Richard Carlson 2) Shortcut Through Therapy by Richard CarlsonIf you haven't read them yet, do yourself a favor and do it at your earliest convenience before another book on fiction, self-improvement/self-help, because after you read these and start acknowledging and applying these easy to use principles your life will have a drastic change in bettering yourself. Applying the principles has nothing to do with complicated graphs or charts, and just by reading each principle and corresponding application of the principle, you will absolutely have a crystal clear way of understanding how your moods & feelings work for and against you, and NOT becoming overburdened by some of life's many pitfalls. I wouldn't be givning this book enough justice if I didn't say that the 2 books mentioned above(especially the one in this review)have become literally "Life-Shaping" in their own and have really expanded my thought processes to put those negative moods/feelings in 'Check' so they don't bother me as much as they used to. I firmly believe that anyone who puts some time aside and dedicates themselves to reading and remembering the things said in these golden little tomes will eventually be succeed in many different aspects in their own lives. I can't stress getting these two books enough. If 2 books were worth their weight in gold, these would be them. Gain control and harness your thoughts, moods, and feelings, and accept that the (So-called down days (low-cycle days) are only obstacles that push you back from achieving your maximum potential in crucial area's of your life. 5 Stars all the way baby!!

This is like 20 years of therapy, in one book. Change your life, read this. I have given 6 away, and read it 3 times over the last decade. Always a good idea.

Excellent book. This changed how I see my life for the better. I highly recommend it for anyone who ever feels overwhelmed by worry, fear, discontent, or any other negative feelings. It will help you easily recognize and gain control over any negative thoughts that pop up suddenly. I experienced a dramatic, positive shift in my own attitude from the moment I started this book and I quickly got really good at recognizing and dismissing negative thoughts as they popped up - the same thoughts that used to run on autopilot in my mind and eventually overwhelm me. He shows you how to easily master this. It's a quick tweak that once mastered can become a new way of life by the time you finish the book.

If you are truly ready to be happy and to stop holding on to your "story" of why you tell yourself you can't then this is a GREAT book. Recognizing the resistance to being happy and the addiction to being unhappy is the first, difficulty step that has taken me a long time to see. I was in the middle of this book when my mom suddenly became ill and passed away. I was able to recognize my own warning signs of unhappiness and deal with them in a more effective manner and I am moving forward in life rather than spinning in grief. I am truly ready to be happy, no excuses no it feels great.
